As soon as this video clip went viral, the internet was filled with many theories to explain this bizarre phenomenon. As per the Mother Nature Network, it is quite likely that these worms were swept up by heavy winds and then dropped throughout the city. The scientific journal claimed that such incidents happen when insects are caught up in a whirlpool, during a storm. While this theory seems logical, it has not been officially confirmed yet.

A Twitter user also offered an explanation that might be closer to the truth. Calling the “worm rain” fake news, the Twitter user explained that the slimy-looking things in all the pictures were poplar flowers. It is a tulip tree whose blooms resemble earthworms. Many users supported this claim. “These are not worms or animals, but flower stalks dropped from trees,” a user said. Another user added that “The things that fall from poplar trees in spring are not caterpillars, but inflorescences of poplar trees. When poplar flower spikes start to fall, it means that they are about to bloom“.

This highlights the importance of being aware of fake news and how easily it spreads. In many incidents, many creatures are lifted in storms and thrown somewhere else. Usually, strong winds lift many small creatures and carry them into the clouds. This is how where travel long distances and come down with the rain. However, when the weather gets unusually cold, the reptiles become stiff and tumble to the ground. For example, last December it was believed that iguanas could rain down from trees in Florida due to colder temperatures.
