Reports suggest that Maruti is planning to bring back its diesel engines, which were discontinued due to the BS6 norms. Almost every Maruti car had a diesel heart, however, all of them are now just petrol models. While Maruti claims this to be a positive change, many prospective buyers were not happy with this move.
Recently, there have been various spy shots of Maruti cars being tested with diesel engines. These include Ertiga, S-Cross and Ciaz being spotted. Mostly, the 1.5 Litre DDiS 225 four-cylinder unit will make a comeback and not the MJD engines. This particular engine is homegrown and was launched in 2019 itself.

So, Maruti will bring back the oil burners but only for a couple of cars. The list includes Maruti Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6 and S-Cross. What remains unsure is that if Vitara Brezza and Baleno will also get their diesel motor back. Although, there are mild speculations that Brezza might also get it.
The 1.5 Litre diesel engine is good for 100 PS and 225 Nm of peak torque, which will come paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The power figures will be altered as per the car, depending on the conditions. With the relaunch of Maruti diesel cars, it can finally make up its lost space in the market.
Following Maruti, many other automakers decided to discontinue diesel engines and focus only on petrol cars. Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Renault and Nissan have already done that. Other manufacturers have discontinued diesel engines on their entry-level cars as well. However, these brands are for sure not bringing back their diesel motors.
