So the Volkswagen Tiguan is here and although it is a bit more expensive than the Hyundai Tucson, the two can be viewed as an indirect rival. Other than the Tucson, the Tiguan will also go up against the Jeep Compass, which is another upcoming SUV that is likely to threaten the Korean SUV’s sales performance. While we have already compared the Jeep Compass with the Hyundai Tucson, you can read on for new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan vs Hyundai Tucson post here.

The latest Hyundai Tucson is available in both Petrol and Diesel variants. Thanks to Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language, the Tucson manages to look fairly flamboyant. There’s also enough kit on offer. In comparison, the Tiguan’s design is all about clean surfaces and understated elegance. Also, the Tiguan has gone on sale with just one Diesel engine.
Volkswagen Tiguan vs Hyundai Tucson Price Comparison
Volkswagen Tiguan Price | Rs 27.98 Lakh to Rs 31.38 Lakh (Ex-showroom) |
Hyundai Tucson Price | Rs 19 Lakh to Rs 25.01 Lakh (Ex-showroom) |
Compared to the Tiguan, the Tucson is a lot cheaper. However, the Tiguan does boast things like all-wheel drive, something the Tucson does not get. Volkswagen India is known to price its cars considerably higher than the immediate competition. Things have not changed with the launch of the Tiguan. The Tiguan tries to justify its higher price tag thru bits like a DSG gearbox, powerful engines and the proverbial German build quality.

Volkswagen Tiguan vs Hyundai Tucson Design Comparison
While both these models are almost the same in size, their respective designs are poles apart. While the Tiguan is all about clean lines and neat surfaces, the Tucson has flamboyance in abundance. Also, the Tucson looks just a tad bit more modern, while the Tiguan has plenty of understated elegance. It’s about personal choices, really. Our pick, however, is the Tiguan, which gets a timeless design.
The interior of the Tucson doesn’t compliment its exterior. While the dashboard does look fairly modern, there’s no hint of the flamboyance that the car has on display on the outside. The Tiguan’s cabin, however, is very well a reflection of its exterior. The interior gets clean lines and neat surfaces, too. Both the models here are strict 5-seaters and should offer similar levels of space.
Volkswagen Tiguan vs Hyundai Tucson Comparison Verdict
- Price: The Tucson has a definite price advantage here. However, for the extra money, the Tiguan also offers more.
- Specifications: While the Tucson comes with a Petrol and a Diesel engine, the Tiguan SUV for India offers just one Diesel engine. Also, the Tiguan misses out on a manual transmission, but its 7-speed DSG Auto ‘box is definitely better than the Tucson’s torque-converter unit. The Hyundai also misses out on AWD.
- Mileage: No clear winner here.
- Dimensions: Again, both the models are equally matched.
- Design: Compared to the flamboyant design of the Tucson, the Tiguan comes with a clean, fuss-free design that is typical of a Volkswagen. Between these two, we will pick the Tiguan’s interior.
VERDICT: Well, it’s tough to pick a clear winner here. While the two models could be evenly matched in many aspects, it’s in areas like design and transmission technology where these two models are poles apart. Also, pricing plays a key role. The Tiguan could threaten the sales performance of the top end variants of the Tucson.
