We Indians love our SUVs and this is a fact known to every automobile manufacturer that is currently operating in India. Volkswagen, the German car marquee has been present in India for a while now but has been missing from the SUV segment. Not anymore, as Volkswagen has added an SUV to its lineup. This SUV in question is the latest generation Tiguan that was on display at the Auto Expo 2016. Prices of the new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV start at Rs. 27.98 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Production of the SUV is underway at Volkswagen’s facility in Aurangabad. Here, in this post, we’ve put together all the available details on the new Volkswagen Tiguan India launch.

Volkswagen Tiguan Price in India
Variant | Ex-Showroom Delhi Price |
Volkswagen Tiguan Comfortline | Rs. 26.56 lakh |
Volkswagen Tiguan Highline | Rs. 29.83 lakh |
In India, the Tiguan comes in Comfortline and Highline trims. The Volkswagen Tiguan price in India starts from Rs. 26.56 lakh (ex-showroom). The top-of-the-line Highline trim costs Rs. 29.83 lakh ex-showroom. The GST regime has benefitted the Tiguan, which has seen a reduction in price since July 1, 2017.
Volkswagen, with the exception of the new Ameo, has never been aggressive with the pricing of its products. In the case of the Tiguan, the sticker price of above 28 lakh places it bang in the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner territory. With most buyers giving preference to looks and size over everything else, the Tiguan might find it a bit tough to attract buyers.

VW revealed a three-row version of the Tiguan called the Tiguan Allspace last year. Built primarily for the Chinese market, it could make sense for India as well. And a 7 seat version will be better equipped to challenge the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq. However, China is a left hand drive market. So, engineering a right hand drive version of the Tiguan Allspace might not be feasible. Therefore, India gets the standard 5-seat version of the Tiguan.

Volkswagen Tiguan India – Exterior Design
The Tiguan bears the unmistakable Volkswagen family look with its clean straight lines. The nose gets a chrome grille that flows neatly into the headlamps. Tiguan features all-LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights. Its bonnet features sharp straight lines, much like the rest of the car. At the back, the Tiguan gets boomerang-shape LED tail lamps. The tail bears a typical Volkswagen look. Overall, the styling isn’t very eye catching, but it works well and ensures the Tiguan is a smart looking SUV.
Volkswagen Tiguan India – Interior Design
Much like the exterior, the interior of the Tiguan also features typical Volkswagen understated elegance. India-spec version is likely to get a black beige treatment with piano black highlights. The centre console features a digital screen that can also double up as the display for navigation. The standard Tiguan does not come with a third row of seats.

Volkswagen Tiguan India – Engine & Transmission
The only option in Tiguan’s engine lineup in India is the 2.0-litre TDI Diesel. Internationally, it is available in two states of tune – 190 HP & 400 Nm and 150 HP & 340 Nm. The latter is the state of tune India gets. A 7-speed DSG automatic transmission is standard. Both variants get an All Wheel Drive system. Internationally, the Tiguan is also available with a 150 PS 1.4 TSI Petrol engine. India could get this engine as well, but at a later stage. The 6-speed manual on offer in other markets has not made it to India.
