In the Indian automobile industry a major market share goes to small cars or hatchbacks. They are practical, economical and also considerable for your pocket. Besides being economical many hatchbacks do offer good power and torque figures that are enough to attract car enthusiasts.
Some of the best examples are Tata Indica Vista 90BHP, Hyundai i20 and the very lovely Fiat Grande Punto. Although these are not volumes puller, the sheer pleasure available at the throttle is unmatched. Volkswagen, with its very successful Volkswagen Polo, is planning at recreating a similar strong charm with a more powerful CRDI diesel version of the car.

Polo is being offered with a 1.2 litre diesel engine,a 1.2 litre petrol and a powerful 1.6 MPFI petrol engine but since the petrol prices have already soared enough, there seems no practicality in running a powerful and less economical petrol car. The company is studying the market right now and is planning to introduce the Polo with Volkswagen Vento’s 1.6 Litre diesel engine.
By putting in Vento’s 1.6 litre diesel heart in Polo, the latter will get transformed into a very powerful yet practical hatch on road. The diesel heart produces 105 BHP of max power and 253 Nm of peak torque, which is quite a lot for a hatch of this size and we can expect the manufacturer will re-tune the engine bringing down the power and torque figures close to 90-95 BHP.
If the company does so, the cost of the Polo 1.6 TDI is likely to surpass 9 Lakhs, which is too much for a hatch but let us wait and see what the company is working upon and what is the outcome.
