Volkswagen India’s model lineup has started showing its age and is in dire need of some fresh new products. And that is exactly what the German car manufacturer brought to the Auto Expo this year. VW unveiled the highly anticipated compact sedan based on the Polo‘s platform, along with the India-spec Tiguan SUV and Passat GTE executive sedan. The bi-annual Auto Expo is the Indian Automobile Industry’s biggest event, which is used as a platform by manufacturers to showcase new and future products to the consumers. Volkswagen Cars at Auto Expo 2016 – Volkswagen Ameo
VW will launch a compact sedan for the Indian market based on the Polo this year. The production spec model was showcased at the Auto Expo recently, but the launch will not take place until the festive season this year. The front end and the interiors have been borrowed from the Polo, while the rear end has been designed along the lines of what we have seen on other VW products.

Keeping in mind Volkswagen’s slightly premium image, the Compact Sedan could be priced slightly higher than its major rivals. However, Volkswagen India has announced that the prices will be very competitive. Prices are expected to start at around INR 5.5 lacs for the base trims.

Being a sub-4 metre offering, the compact sedan will share its engine and transmission options with the Polo. The petrol variants will be powered by a 74 bhp 1.2-litre unit mated to a 5-speed manual while the diesel variants will be powered by an 89 bhp 1.5-litre engine mated to a 5-speed manual.

Its major rivals will include the Maruti Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and the Ford Figo Aspire.

Volkswagen Cars at Auto Expo 2016 – New Passat GTE India Debut
Volkswagen India will reintroduce the Passat in the Indian market this year. The 2016 edition is an all new product, which, according to VW, is bigger and more luxurious than the previous model. The Passat GTE is a plug-in hybrid powered by an electric motor and a TSI engine.

The new Passat will be significantly more expensive than the previous generation model. Expect prices to start at around INR 35 lacs.

The Passat GTE comes with a Petrol-Electric Hybrid setup mated with a 6-speed DSG gear box and has a combined power (engine + electric motor) output of approximately 218 PS. The 1.4-litre TSI engine develops a power of 156 PS; the electric motor produces 115 PS, while the maximum combined torque is 400 Nm.

With an expected pricing of around 35 lacs, the Passat will end up rivalling the Toyota Camry as well as more premium products such as the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series and the likes.

Volkswagen Cars at Auto Expo 2016 – New Tiguan India Debut
Joining the new compact sedan and the Passat at VW’s stall was the latest iteration of the Tiguan SUV. Unveiled in 2015, the German car manufacturer will bring the 7-seater version of the Tiguan to India this year.

The Tiguan will be priced in the INR 20-25 lacs price bracket. However, this is just an estimate as prices could even stretch out to 28-20 lacs.

The India-spec Tiguan will only get a diesel engine option, which will include the 2.0 litre TDI that produces 180 PS bhp. This engine will be mated a 7-speed DSG.

Volkswagen Cars at Auto Expo 2016 – Polo GTI India Launch
A few months back, the Polo GTI was spotted testing on Indian roads and Volkswagen has now confirmed that the hot hatch will be launched in India. Apart from the 3-door body style which sets it apart from the standard Polo, the GTI gets a new set of headlamps, bumper and other details.

The hot hatch won’t come cheap considering it will be imported to India via the CBU route. It could be priced as high as INR 20 lacs. The closest rival to the Polo GTI in India will be the Fiat Punto Abarth, which retails for around 10 lacs (ex-showroom).

Powering the Polo GTI is a 1.8-litre, four-pot turbocharged petrol motor that pumps out 187 bhp of max. power and 320 Nm of peak torque. The motor comes mated to a 7-speed DSG and VW claims a 0-100 km/h time of just 6.7 seconds!
