In this post, we shall take a look at the details of the 4 upcoming Mahindra SUVs in India. We know that Mahindra is prepping an onslaught of SUVs, mostly electric, for the coming years. In fact, it had already announced 5 electric SUVs within the next couple of years. A couple of them will be based on the existing XUV700, while the rest will utilize the Born Electric (BE) nameplate which signifies a bespoke electric architecture. Apart from that, the most anticipated SUV from Mahindra has to be the 5-door Thar. We have spotted it testing for months now. Even the EVs were seen performing road testing across various terrains in the country. Let us take a look at the details of these SUVs.

Mahindra Thar 5-door
Let us commence this list with the Mahindra Thar 5-door. Thar is the most accomplished and successful off-roading SUV in the country. It has been around since 2010. In its latest iteration, it has experienced an immense boom in popularity. The reason is the fact that it now comes with the latest tech and convenience features to pamper the customers. However, one disadvantage of the Thar in its current form is the lack of rear doors and a spacious cabin. The 5-door version aims to remedy that. The extended wheelbase will ensure that it gets two additional doors, a more spacious boot compartment and a bigger legroom.
In addition to the physical enlargement, the 5-door Thar will use the same platform as the Scorpio N. That will enable the elongation of the wheelbase easily. Furthermore, it could even borrow the powertrain options from the Scorpio N. This includes a 2.0-litre turbo petrol or a 2.2-litre turbo diesel mill. Note that it already gets this engine but in a lower state of tune. But the 5-door iteration will most likely see a bump in power and torque figures to compensate for the added weight. Finally, the interior will get some additional features in comparison to the current-gen model like a bigger touchscreen infotainment display.

Mahindra XUV.e8
The next vehicle on this list of the 4 upcoming Mahindra SUVs in India is the XUV.e8. Now, this is one of those EVs which will be a derivative of an existing ICE car. In this case, the XUV700 will be the donor model for this electric SUV. Looking at the spy images and the concept version showcased by Mahindra, the design resemblance is apparent. At the front, there are large LED DRLs, a sporty bumper, an upright bonnet, and a skid plate. Apart from that, the side profile reveals the sheer length of the EV. It will most likely offer modern alloy wheels with aerodynamic characteristics.
The rear is what gives away the true identity of its donor model. Even though the production model is not revealed yet, the spy images of the test mules and concept version demonstrate the LED taillamp structure much similar to the XUV700. The details about the powertrain will be revealed later. But it could carry an 80 kWh battery pack with a single-motor 2WD or a dual-motor AWD configuration. During the official announcement a couple of years ago, Mahindra mentioned that the XUV.e8 will have the following dimensions:
Dimensions | Mahindra XUV.e8 |
Length | 4,740 mm |
Width | 1,900 mm |
Height | 1,760 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,762 mm |
Mahindra BE.05
Then there is the Mahindra BE.05 which we have already spotted on multiple occasions in recent times. As the name suggests, this will be based on the INGLO Born Electric platform. This means that it won’t be derivative of any other previous model. That is what makes everything about this EV intriguing. Let us commence with the design. It bears a futuristic appearance with a coupe silhouette. At the rear, there is a distinct spoiler with a contour in the middle. Also, the bootlid gets a connected LED taillamp setup. The sloping roofline will make it one of the most exciting vehicles on the road.
In fact, this has to be among the first EVs from the Indian carmaker based on the INGLO platform. We could see this in the flesh by next year (2025). It could rival the upcoming Tata CURVV EV, BYD Atto 3 and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV. A few weeks ago, the Indian carmaker was testing it in the treacherous regions of the Himalayas (Leh and Ladakh). That clarifies that it will be a rugged vehicle which will be tested across diverse terrains and climatic conditions. It will have the following dimensions:
Dimensions | Mahindra BE.05 |
Length | 4,370 mm |
Width | 1,900 mm |
Height | 1,635 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,775 mm |
Mahindra BE.07
Finally, there will also be the BE.07 as one of the upcoming Mahindra SUVs in India. Like the BE.05, the BE.07 will be the larger sibling that will use the INGLO bespoke architecture. Hence, it won’t be restricted by any design limitations of an existing ICE model. That is what will make this EV so special. The road presence will definitely be imposing and unique as even it will get that coupe appearance. While there are no coupe SUVs in the mass market today, I believe that the next couple of years will look a lot different. Many carmakers are experimenting with the idea of coupe SUVs for the masses. Mahindra will join that list too.
Unfortunately, the details of the BE.07 are even more scarce. But going by the official announcement regarding the concept models, the front section has large C-shaped LED DRLs flanking the main headlamp cluster, a rugged front section with a concealed area and a sturdy skid plate. The side profile gets a solid layout with squared-off wheel arches and colossal alloy wheels. Even these will be aerodynamically designed. The rear section will carry the LED taillamp configuration with sleek lights which also form a ‘C’. The roof-mounted spoiler will be integrated smoothly. It will be interesting to see how well these design elements get translated into production. The dimensions include:
Dimensions | Mahindra BE.07 |
Length | 4,565 mm |
Width | 1,900 mm |
Height | 1,660 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,775 mm |
Our View
Mahindra is on its way to becoming a dominant player in the EV space in times to come. It had announced its ambitious plans a couple of years ago. During this time, we have spotted its first EVs performing road tests rigorously. Hence, it seems like the Indian SUV maker is well on track to realizing its plans. The next couple of years will shape the future of the Indian automobile industry in terms of electrification. I, for one, am massively excited to see how our beloved industry shapes up. Also, we must not forget that the 5-door Thar is also a widely anticipated SUV in India at the moment. Hence, its sales will even boost the market share of Mahindra once it launches.
