Tata Harrier EV and Safari EV
Let us kick things off with the upcoming electric versions of the Tata Harrier and Safari siblings. In the electric guise, these EVs will become the new flagship models in the Indian auto giant’s lineup. The Harrier EV was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2023 in New Delhi at the beginning of this year. These will most likely come with a dual-motor setup enabling an all-wheel-drive configuration. While official announcements are pending, there are expectations of an impressive range surpassing 500 km. Positioned above the Nexon EV, it is likely to incorporate a significantly larger battery pack, leading to higher power and torque figures. Consequently, both the exterior and interior designs could showcase a much more modern aesthetic in comparison to the standard Harrier model.

Tata Punch EV
Tata Motors is set to launch the Punch EV in the Indian market in 2024, a vehicle that has been spotted during road tests on several occasions. Along with a few design enhancements, it is likely to incorporate the same electric technology found in the Tiago. This includes a 25.58 kWh Lithium-ion battery that provides an approximate range of 320-350 km on a single charge.
The electric motor can deliver commendable performance, generating 74 hp and 114 Nm of peak power and torque. The Punch EV will propel the front wheels through a single-speed transmission, achieving an acceleration from 0 to 80 km/h in approximately 13.5 seconds. The top speed is around 85 km/h, with a primary focus on optimizing driving range, similar to the Tiago EV. Interestingly, there is a possibility that it might also incorporate the electric motor from the Nexon in a de-tuned state.

Tata CURVV EV
Tata Motors is set to introduce a brand-new SUV to its lineup, known as CURVV, which made its debut at the Auto Expo 2023. Measuring approximately 4.3 metres in length, it competes directly with the Hyundai Creta and interestingly fills the space between the Nexon and Harrier SUVs. Featuring an SUV-coupe silhouette, CURVV aims to be highly appealing. The SUV will provide various powertrain options, including a new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and an electric version that incorporates technology from the popular Nexon EV. The interior could boast a modern design, with the latest technology, convenience features, and connectivity options.

Hyundai Exter EV
Shifting our focus to the second-largest carmaker in the country, we are expecting the launch of the Hyundai Exter EV in 2024 too. Hyundai has not been in the mass market electric car race with full throttle just yet. At present, it is the Indian auto giant, Tata Motors which is leading this sector. Hyundai would want to change that going forward. As a result, the Exter EV could be the first product aiming to cater to a wide audience. Since Hyundai doesn’t have any compact EV in its lineup just yet, we are not sure about the powertrain it will carry. However, in terms of aesthetics, we expect it to bear minor modifications to distinguish itself from its ICE counterpart. The interior cabin will feature the latest tech, connectivity and convenience functions.

Hyundai Creta EV
Then we have the electric avatar of the Hyundai Creta. The facelift Creta will arrive on January 16, 2024. Thereafter, Hyundai will focus on the electric version of the highest-selling mid-size SUV in the country. The electric Creta could even replace the not-so-successful Kona Electric in our market. Expect it to feature a 39.2 kWh Lithium-ion polymer battery pack that powers a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) with a peak output of 136 PS and 395 Nm. Using an AC home charger, the battery pack can recharge from 0 to 100% in approximately 6 hours and 10 minutes. Alternatively, with a 50 kW DC fast charger, you can achieve an 80% charge from 0 in just 57 minutes. According to ARAI, the Kona Electric boasts an impressive driving range of 452 km on a full charge.

Mahindra XUV.e8
Mahindra has huge plans of launching 5 electric SUVs within the next couple of years in our market. It will commence with the XUV.e8. The Mahindra XUV.e8 is the flagship release from the Indian automotive giant. It is the electric version of the XUV700. The Mahindra XUV.e8 could include an 80 kWh battery pack and an all-wheel-drive system. Its powertrain will utilize a dual-motor configuration, providing a total output of 230 PS and 350 Nm. Serving as the first all-electric vehicle in the XUV.e lineup, it can enter the market by the end of 2024, positioning itself as a strong contender against the Tata Harrier.EV. However, more details are still pending and will be revealed in due course.

Kia EV9
The EV9 will be the first 7-seat electric SUV from Kia. It will be based on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) architecture. On the inside, it has tons of recycled materials used to create the upholstery, door panels, floor mats and dashboard. In terms of specifications, the concept EV9 has dimensions of 4,930 mm in length, 2,055 mm in width, and 1,790 mm in height, featuring a wheelbase of 3,100 mm. It claims an impressive range of approximately 300 miles (483 km). Although it could be equipped with a 77 kWh battery, some may find this size insufficient to power such a large SUV effectively. Additionally, there will be both 2WD and 4WD configurations available. The charging system is designed to support a DC ultra-fast system of 350 kW, capable of charging the battery from 10% to 80% in just 20-30 minutes. Further details will be disclosed as the debut date approaches later.

Skoda Enyaq
The Czech carmaker is currently testing the Enyaq EV in India. While there is no official confirmation yet, we anticipate that the Enyaq iV will be available in its sportiest configurations. This might encompass a 77 kWh battery pack powering two electric motors—one on each axle—resulting in an all-wheel-drive setup. This configuration is expected to deliver a robust peak power of 265 hp, facilitating a quick 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 6.9 seconds. Notably, it is projected to boast an impressive WLTP range of 513 km. In terms of charging capabilities, the Enyaq iV is poised to feature a 125 kW DC fast charging system. We eagerly look forward to the prospect of encountering this in dealership showrooms, with a potential launch in the first half of 2024.

Maruti eVX
Maruti will also finally enter the EV space in India with the eVX. It was displayed at the Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi. While there is no official announcement yet, the eVX is anticipated to be equipped with a 60 kWh battery pack, potentially powering either a single- or dual-motor setup for a 2WD and AWD configuration, respectively. This setup could generate peak power ranging from 138 to 170 hp. Notably, the expected range is around 550 km. The dimensions are projected to be approximately 4,300 mm (length), 1,800 mm (width), and 1,600 mm (height), featuring a segment-best wheelbase. However, we will need to await official confirmation on these specifications. A glimpse into the interior reveals a minimalist design.

Nissan Leaf
Nissan Leaf is among the foremost EVs in the world. It commenced production back in 2010. It is still selling well in many parts of the world. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that India might also get its share of the Leaf. It offers a choice between a 40-kWh or a 62-kWh battery pack. The smaller unit provides 147 hp and a range of 240 km, while the larger battery pack delivers 214 hp and extends the range to 364 km. Charging these batteries to full capacity takes approximately 7 hours with the 240 V charging equipment and 18 hours with the regular power adaptor. The Nissan Leaf is priced at Rs 59.99 lakh in Nepal, equivalent to Rs 37.45 lakh INR. If introduced in India, the Leaf would position itself above the Nexon, ZS EV, and Kona Electric in our market.

Honda Elevate EV
Ever since the launch of the Elevate mid-size SUV in India, speculations about an all-electric version are surfacing. Within the next 6 years, Honda plans to launch 5 new SUVs. That is a testament to the belief Honda has in the popularity of SUVs. Moreover, this also represents the shift that almost every carmaker is going through toward electrification. At the moment, Honda is only offering full hybrid cars in our market. Therefore, it remains to be seen which powertrain it decides to offer in the Elevate EV in times to come.

MG 5 EV
MG Motors has huge plans for the future in India. It could launch a bunch of electrified vehicles including fully electric, as well as hybrid. The first one on this list is the MG 5 EV. It carries a station wagon silhouette. It comes with a 61 kWh battery (57.4 kWh usable). This battery packs powers the electric motor which generates a decent 156 PS and 280 Nm of peak power and torque. The acceleration from 0 to 97 km/h takes 7.3 seconds and the top speed is 185 km/h. As per the WLTP cycle, it can offer 402 km of range on a single charge. Using a 150 kW rapid DC charger, you could juice up the battery from 10 to 80% in just 35 minutes.

MG eHS
Next up is the MG eHS SUV, showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. This plug-in hybrid, currently available in Europe, boasts dimensions slightly larger than the ZS EV. It can be viewed as a hybrid variant of the Hector. Powered by a robust 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine coupled with an electric motor, it achieves a combined peak power output of 254 hp. The electric motor draws energy from a 16.6 kWh battery pack, enabling an electric-only drive for approximately 52 km. Inside, it features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and a multitude of additional features, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

MG 4 EV
Finally, there is also the MG 4 EV which might come to India. The MG 4 EV stands out as one of the British carmaker’s most popular products, widely acclaimed in numerous international markets. Positioned as a premium electric hatchback crossover, it shares its foundation with SAIC’s modular scalable platform and closely resembles the size and dimensions of the ZS EV. In international markets, it comes with two battery pack options – a 51 kWh and a 64 kWh. Both versions provide a respectable 250 Nm of peak torque, with power outputs differing at 170 hp and 203 hp, respectively. Despite the smaller battery pack, owners can anticipate a range of around 350 km, while the larger battery can extend the range to approximately 452 km on a single charge, as per the WLTP cycle. The MG 4 EV supports 150 kW DC fast charging to replenish these batteries. Inside, it features a minimalist interior characteristic of modern EVs.
