While the entire world is running toward EVs, there are some concrete challenges attached to them. These include high initial cost, a lack of charging infrastructure, range anxiety and limited options. Until the ecosystem around EVs grows, CNG mills are a great solution. In urban centres, you would easily find a CNG filling station. Also, the running costs are low and the initial costs are not too high in comparison to ICE cars. Tata Nexon

The first vehicle on this list is the Tata Nexon. Note that it is already available in petrol, diesel and electric avatars. That makes it one of the most attractive vehicles for buyers. They can choose between all these mills as per their budget and usage requirements. Tata offers the unique twin-cylinder technology in its other CNG cars which ensures that there is enough space in the boot compartment for the luggage. This is done by offering two small-sized CNG cylinders rather than one large unit. Hence, the two cylinders easily fit under the boot floor. As per some reports online, the Nexon CNG could get 105 PS and 150 Nm of peak power and torque.

Tata Curvv

Yet another Tata product on this list is the Curvv. It is the upcoming mid-size SUV with a coupe silhouette. I have reported spotting it on public roads on many occasions in recent months. In fact, it was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo earlier this year in near-production guise. It exterior appearance will be the most attractive aspect. However, it will be one of the very few vehicles in the country which will offer the buyers the option of choosing between petrol, diesel, electric and CNG mills. That is something we have seen with Tata cars. I think it will share the powertrain with the Tata Nexon CNG.

Kia Sonet CNG

Then there is the Kia Sonet on this list of the upcoming CNG SUVs in India. Sonet is among the most feature-rich compact SUVs in our market. It features in a competitive space. Going forward, we might also see its CNG version. It already offers petrol and diesel engine options to the buyers. With the CNG mill, it will become even more enticing for the customers. It had been spotted testing in the CNG version some time ago. However, it was not clear whether the company was ready to launch it or not. Hence, we shall have to wait a bit more to get more details. Still, car experts are anticipating the launch in November this year.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is also about to get a CNG variant soon. Note that the Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the badge-engineered iteration of the Maruti Grand Vitara. The latter is already available with the CNG powertrain. Since they both share the powertrain options, it is just a matter of time before we witness the CNG iteration of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder as well. In the Maruti Grand Vitara, the 1.5-litre petrol+CNG mill produces 87 hp and 121.5 Nm of peak power and torque. Even the Toyota counterpart will utilize this. There is a sole 5-speed manual transmission on offer with this engine. It will be the case with the Hyryder too.

Kia Carens

Finally, Kia Carens is the last vehicle on this list of the upcoming CNG SUVs in India. Carens is a successful 7-seat SUV from the Korean auto giant in India. In fact, it has already sold over 1,50,000 units since its launch in February 2022. Now, the company wants to reach even more customers which is why the CNG variant will be launched soon. Carens offers the latest tech, connectivity and convenience features to pamper the customers already. With the addition of another powertrain, a wider range of potential customers can be targeted. The 1.5-litre petrol engine will receive the CNG fuel. As per some reports online, this arrangement will generate 100 hp and 133 Nm of peak power and torque.
