According to a latest report, several Mahindra dealerships have started taking unofficial bookings for the next-gen Thar, hinting at its imminent launch very soon.
The Mahindra Thar has to be one of the most anticipated new car launches of this year and one that enthusiasts have been patiently waiting for. Just some time ago, we reported to you with a spy shot of the new Thar reportedly being dispatched to dealership yards. According to a latest report however, many Mahindra dealerships have started taking bookings for the new Thar. Although Mahindra hasn’t announced the official opening of bookings for the SUV, unofficial bookings for the new Thar hints at the imminent launch very soon.
The new Mahindra Thar was supposed to launch in April, but there have been numerous delays. The report also claims that the Thar could be launched in the market by August. The ongoing coronavirus scare and transition to BS6 emission norms have inevitably delayed the coming of the new SUV. As we are coming out of the lockdown, Mahindra will probably start its slew of launches with the new Thar and it will soon be followed by the next-gen Scorpio and the next-gen XUV500 in the coming months.
The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be powered by a BS6-compliant version of Mahindra’s tried-and-tested 2.2-litre diesel engine. The engine puts out much more power now at around 140bhp and it will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra is even expected to offer an automatic gearbox option with the new Thar. This time around, Mahindra will also offer a new petrol engine on the Thar for the first time. This new engine will be a 2.0L turbocharged unit that belongs to Mahindra’s mStallion family of engines.

Its also larger than its predecessor and looks more capable than ever before. The interiors also get a completely new dashboard design. Its much more premium and will come much better equipped than its predecessor. In terms of features, the new Thar will come equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a multi-info display in the instrument cluster, manual AC, and multiple USB ports.

We can’t wait for Mahindra to finally unveil this SUV. With all the updates, the prices will of course go up but it should still be pretty worth it. When launched, the new Mahindra Thar will continue to rival the Force Gurkha which was also updated at the 2020 Auto Expo. Apart from that, the Thar will have a brand new competitor in the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as well.
