UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018

United Motors a.k.a. UM launched its operations in India back in 2016. Launched at the 2016 Auto Expo, their main target was to disrupt the Royal Enfield’s monopoly in the 350cc segment by introducing a much more refined and aesthetically appealing cruiser at a discount. UM launched the Renegade and Renegade Sport initially with the Commando coming in after a while. While the company set up its operations in India, the initiative to Make In India has held its benefits. UM aims at making India their manufacturing base for the entire South East Asia region. The company plans to come up with a handful of new products, some of which are likely to be seen at the Auto Expo 2018. Here’s a lowdown at UM Global bikes at Auto Expo 2018 –

UM currently has a manufacturing facility in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, with a manufacturing capacity of 3000 bikes per month. It is planning to set up another factory down south. The upcoming products from UM Global at Auto Expo 2018 will be produced at the new facility. UM currently has 70 dealerships across India and plans to expand its dealer and service network further across tier II and tier III cities soon.

UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018 – New 230cc Engine

UM is all set to unveil their new 230cc engine in the Indian market. The upcoming engine will be unveiled at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo. UM is planning an entirely different model lineup for the new engine with cycle parts being shared with the present models while certain distinguishing factors to make it look apart. The new bike is yet to be named and will be unveiled along with the engine at the 2018 Auto Expo.

The new 230cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine will have less power output than the existing 279.5cc engine that powers the current lineup. If compared, the former produces 19.5 PS of power while the latter makes 25.15 PS of power. The new engine is aimed at keeping the price of the upcoming bike in check and is expected to undercut the Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 350 by a healthy margin. The current 279.5cc engine produces 25.15PS of power at 8,500 rpm and 23 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Currently, the most affordable offering by UM is the Renegade S which retails at INR 1,59,652 ex-showroom, Delhi.

UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018 – New Scrambler

UM is working on a scrambler version based on the Renegade cruisers currently sold here. The bike will use the Renegade frame which is expected to be strengthened for off-road use. It is expected to get long-travel front forks and twin gas-charged shock absorbers at the rear. Other scrambler bits like a high-mounted exhaust, flat seats and underbody bash plates should make their way to the new motorcycle. The bike is expected to come with spoked wheels and dual-purpose tyres with a larger diameter front wheel. The upcoming scrambler motorcycle will make its world debut at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show later this year.

The Scrambler is expected to get clip-on handlebars and a detachable pillion seat hump. Suspension travel is expected to be less on the cafe racer as well, owing to its primary on-road use.

UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018 – Hypersport

UM’s other upcoming bike will be a dual-purpose machine from its international lineup. While they have not divulged any details on this bike, it will most likely be the Hypersport. The UM Hypersport test mules have been seen testing in India for a while now and UM has recently launched it in Nepal too. Now, having a plant in Pantnagar in Uttarakhand, closer to the Indo-Nepal border, it would make sense for UM to manufacture and export the Hypersport from here.

The UM Hypersport is a mini supermoto with a lightweight body and road-spec suspension and tyres. The bike comes with disc brakes on both wheels and weighs a scant 144kg (dry). While the bike is sold overseas in 150cc, 200cc and 223cc guises, that won’t be the case for India. UM officials told us that the India-spec bike will be powered by a motor with a displacement above 300cc. We speculate the new engine will have a displacement between 350-400cc and most likely be a V-twin motor. With a focus on off-road usage, the Hypersport could possibly get long-travel forks and dual-purpose tyres. It is likely to be priced above Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom).

UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018 – New Cruiser

The upcoming offering from UM is expected to be a cruiser. The bike will share the cycle parts with the existing models. The design and theme of the yet-to-be-named bike will distinguish it from the existing lineup and the new, more frugal engine will keep the final price in check. Expect a better fuel economy as well. Certain features like USB charging might be skipped in favour of a stricter price. The upcoming bike will carry the safety features like 360 degree LED lights and Disc brake.

The latest offering from UM is targeted at a pocket-friendly model hence is expected to undercut the Bullet 350 Classic by a healthy margin. The bike is expected to launch at 2018 Auto Expo along with the new 230cc engine.

UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018 – Renegade Duty 230

The Renegade Duty 230 is India-bound and will debut at the Auto Expo 2018. The upcoming UM Global motorcycle is a new 230cc variant in the Renegade range of cruisers. The new motorcycle has already started reaching dealership stockyards. In all probability, the market launch will happen soon after the Expo debut if not at the motor show itself. The Duty 230 will likely cost Rs 1.20 lakh (ex-showroom).

UM Global Bikes at Auto Expo 2018 – Renegade Electric

UM Global is also planning to come up with the Renegade Electric cruiser at the Delhi Auto Expo 2018. While it’s not sure if the UM Renegade would launch in India in near future, the company could use the Expo to gauge the interest of the show-goers. UM unveiled the electric version of the Renegade cruiser motorcycle at the 2017 EICMA. Powering the UM Renegade Electric is a water-cooled electric motor that outputs a maximum power that is comparable to that of a typical 600cc internal combustion motorcycle engine.
