TVS Scooty Pep+ Collects Over 634 Traffic Violations
The TVS Scooty Pep+ with the registration KA04 KF 9072 became infamous with 634 traffic rule violations registered against it since February 2022. RT Nagar traffic police were on the lookout for this prolific rule-breaker, and finally, they tracked down the scooter. The violations, all recorded by the automatic Intelligent Traffic Management System camera, were primarily for not wearing a helmet while riding or talking on the mobile phone.
The scooter’s power rests with Mala Dinesh, a resident of Gaganagar. Dinesh got the scooter in 2021, and the first traffic violation was recorded on 23rd Feb 2022. As of now, there are 634 violations, with the latest recorded on 17th December 2023. The violations predominantly revolve around helmet violations and mobile phone usage while riding.

The Shocking Rs 3.25 Lakh Fine!
The staggering revelation is that the total amount amassed by the scooter in fines is Rs 3.25 lakh, which is about four times the price of the scooter itself. The owner, Dinesh, claimed unawareness of the accumulating fines as he frequently traversed the RT Nagar area. Upon approaching the police station on Tuesday, Dinesh requested the release of the scooter, citing an inability to pay such a massive fine. However, the police stands firm. It asserts that it will release the scooter only after collecting the fine. A notice has been given to the owner as well.
Many Indian cities grapple with escalating traffic violations, partly attributed to intelligent cameras that record each violation separately daily. To address this, traffic police plan a special drive to collect pending fines from the top 100 violators under each traffic police station’s jurisdiction. A team will visit violators’ homes to ensure collection of fines.

Cameras and Challans
Most major cities in India boast a network of closely monitored CCTV cameras. Through these cameras, officers track registration numbers and issue challans for violations. However, instances of incorrect online challans due to faulty number plates have occurred. Fortunately, there’s a redressal portal provided by traffic police to challenge these incorrect fines.
The government and authorities actively work to increase fine amounts for violations, aiming to deter people from breaking traffic rules. The objective is to make the roads safer for everyone by reducing dangerous maneuvers and promoting adherence to traffic regulations. India faces one of the highest rates of road accidents globally. These include a significant number of fatal accidents. The installation of surveillance cameras and stringent fine systems aims to curb reckless driving and improve road safety for all users.
