It is a classic case of premium bike manufacturers in joint ventures with domestic players. Triumph has struck a deal with Bajaj where it is using the latter’s manufacturing facilities to jointly develop the 400 series and other upcoming motorcycles. On the other hand, Harley Davidson has joined hands with Hero MotoCorp to develop the X440 and perhaps more models in the future. Hence, it becomes interesting to see how these two stack up against one another.

Triumph Speed 400 vs Harley Davidson X440 – Specs Comparison
Triumph Speed 400 comes powered by a 398.15-cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 4V engine that generates 39.5 hp @8,000 RPM and 37.5 Nm @6,500 RPM of peak power and torque. There is a 6-speed gearbox with this engine with an assist-and-slipper clutch. At the front, one gets a 43 mm USD suspension while the rear gets a Gas Monoshock suspension setup. Moreover, the front alloy wheel is 17-inch with a 110/70 tyre with 300 mm disc brake and the rear alloy wheel is 17-inch with a 150/60 tyre with 230 mm disc brake. While the official mileage figures are not available, the bike will give around 30-32 km/l. The fuel tank is a decent 13 litres and the bike weighs 170 kg.

On the other hand, the Harley Davidson X440 has a 440-cc air-oil cooled, fuel-injected engine that churns out 27 hp @6,000 RPM and 38 Nm @4,000 RPM of peak power and torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed transmission. At the front, the bike gets a KYB with Dual Cartridge Forks and the rear gets a gas-filled twin-tube shock absorber with 7-step preload adjustment. Furthermore, the front alloy wheel is 18-inch with a 100/90 tyre with 320 mm disc brake and the rear alloy wheel is 17-inch with a 140/70 tyre with 240 mm disc. It has a mileage of 35 km/l and a fuel tank capacity of 13.5 litres and its weight is 181 kg.

Price Comparison
The prices of the Triumph Speed 400 have just been revealed. Available only in a single trim, it costs Rs 2.33 lakh (ex-showroom). The first 10,000 customers will get a discount of Rs 10,000 as per the inaugural offer. On the other hand, the prices of the Harley Davidson range from Rs 2.29 lakh to Rs 2.69 lakh, ex-showroom. There are three trims on offer – Denim, Vivid and S, each positioned Rs 20,000 apart from the other. So, basically, the new Triumph is priced almost the same as the base trim of the HD X440, while the latter’s top trim costs significantly more.

What We Think
Needless to mention, both these motorcycles are incredibly capable machines. With the local partners, the prices have been quite competitive which will be a major draw for a whole bunch of bike enthusiasts. The Triumph Speed 400 is certainly more powerful than the Harley Davidson X440 which can translate into a better performance but the torque figures for both these bikes are almost identical. Hence, it would be interesting to see what the actual performance difference in the real world would be. In any case, it is hard to go wrong with either of these accomplished motorcycles since the features list on both bikes is quite extensive.
