In this video, we come across a rather enticing and unique Maruti Omni with an electric powertrain. I have been reporting about incredible aftermarket car modifications for a long time. However, unlike all those cases, this one comes from college students as part of their project. In fact, we see the sticker on the windshield mentioning Srinivas Institute of Technology (Department of Automobile Engineering). The students have done a commendable job not only to modify the aesthetics but also the powertrain. Let us take a look at the details here.
Maruti Omni with Electric Powertrain
This video stems from Vehicleverse on YouTube. The visuals showcase a rather attractive and unique avatar of the Maruti Omni. The students are calling it the Omni E-MAX 2.5. At the front, the appearance of the Omni has been completely transformed. It took the students 5 months to complete this project. At the front, it gets new fascia with round LED DRLs along with LED headlamps, a new broad radiator grille with additional lights, LED fog lamps on the bumper and a new bumper. On the sides, there are wheel covers to accentuate the appearance even further. The team has even added LED lights on the roof which are visible while viewing from the front.
At the rear is where the fun begins. The roof has been deleted and the Omni now bears an open Jeep appearance with sideways seating. In total, this electric Omni can accommodate 10 passengers including the driver. This design was selected keeping in mind the application which will primarily be inside the campus. Hence, students can enjoy the fresh air. The electric motor generates 2.5 kW of power which allows top speed of 50 km/h. It gets an electric motor and a battery which can be charged in 8 hours using a regular charger and 4 hours using a fast charger. On the inside, there are custom-made interiors including steering, switches, reverse camera, screen, Android System and more. This cost the team around Rs 2.5 lakh.
Our View
I am thoroughly impressed by what the students of automobile engineering have been able to achieve. With a budget of just Rs 2.5 lakh, an entirely usable electric vehicle has been developed. This represents what engineering minds are able to achieve. Using an old Maruti Omni, aftermarket components like battery, electric motor, electronics, and other components, a fully-working 10-seater vehicle has been created. We can even see the students drive the EV on the campus at slopes and descents. The performance of the vehicle is adequate. Hence, they can easily use it as a shuttle car for college campus applications.
