While the Toyota Urban Cruiser and Maruti Brezza have both scored 4 points each at NCAP, the former has fared substantially better than its donor model by offering higher adult and child protection
The Toyota Urban Cruiser has finally been tested by Global NCAP in its latest batch of crash tests. As expected, the Brezza-based B-SUV has received a 4-star rating for adult protection, which is exactly what even the Maruti Brezza bagged in an earlier edition of these crash tests. Interestingly, though, the Urban Cruiser has scored 3 stars in child protection against the 2 stars scored by the Brezza. In fact, the rebadged model has fared significantly better than its donor sibling.

In comparison, the Maruti Brezza has also been given a 4-star rating for adult protection but it could manage a total score of 12.51 points out of 17. This is a full point below the Toyota-badged sibling. However, the gap increase by a fair margin if you look at the child protection scores. The Toyota Urban Cruiser has bagged a 3-star rating with a total of 36.68 points out of 49. The testes have stated that the ISOFIX child seat restraints help the SUV prevent excessive forward motion of the head and offer ‘fair’ protection to the chest and low protection to the neck of a 3-year old child. But it offers ‘good’ protection to head and chest of a 1.5-year-old child. In comparison, the Brezza could manage only 17.93 points out of 36.68, thereby getting only a 2-star rating for child protection.

New Toyota Urban Cruiser and Maruti Brezza Expected to Offer Higher Safety
In the coming months, the current Maruti Brezza will be replaced with a highly updated model that is likely to feature thicker sheetmetal and up to 6 airbags. Maruti is said to be aiming for a 5-star NCAP score for its updated Brezza and this will automatically mean a higher score even for the Toyota Urban Cruiser. The updated Brezza should launch before the end of H1, 2022, and the Toyota-badged version could arrive within a few weeks’ time. We also expect the discrepancy in the safety scores of the two models to reduce to almost nothing with the advent of the updated models.
