There are good chances that the electric car onslaught from Toyota-Suzuki would start with the launch of BZ4 in India
The Toyota-Suzuki joint venture, along with the plans of Honda will be instrumental in introducing India to the world of hybrid and electric vehicles. Cleaner mobility solutions is the need of the hour. The biggest environment conferences in the world have set ambitious targets to reduce the carbon footprint within this decade. Automobile marques are bound to move to greener alternatives to achieve the stringent emission norms. Electrified powertrains seem to be the only solution at the moment. In a bid to electrify India, Honda has recently restarted its hybrid onslaught with the launch of its first model under the e:HEV umbrella. Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are planning to introduce vehicles with cleaner emissions very soon. The first EV from the duo could be the Toyota BZ4 electric crossover.

Is Toyota BZ4 India-Bound?
Honda Cars India recently launched the City e:HEV hybrid. The latest-gen Honda City model with a hybrid powertrain has been on sale in the international markets for quite a while now. In spite of the dwindling popularity of the mid-size sedans in India, the introduction of the City hybrid can’t be ignored. It should be particularly enticing for the Indian buyers because it will boast of an impressive fuel economy, which is a major concern for a whole bunch of potential buyers.
On the other hand, the JV between Toyota and Suzuki will see Maruti Suzuki leveraging Toyota’s fleet of 30 new electrified vehicles planned to launch by 2030 in the global market. Since Toyota sells the rebadged version of Maruti Suzuki’s popular cars in India, Suzuki could do the same once the EVs from Toyota start taking shape. The most talked-about electric car from Toyota in recent times is the BZ4 which was revealed last year and will be launched in some markets this year. For the Indian market, it could serve as a perfect rival for the likes of MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric.

What could be easily deduced from these reports is the fact that the future of mobility is electric. Whether there are hybrid products to bridge the gap between IC engines and electric cars or jump directly to the EVs, the change is imminent. We must be prepared for it. The Indian market is still in the nascent stage in terms of EV adoption. But with the rapid development of infrastructure and encouraging EV policies by the government, the transition might be sooner rather than later.
