In the latest video clip, the Toyota Innova Crysta EV was spotted testing alongside the regular model. Innova Crysta is a prominent name in the Indian automobile industry. It is the most successful MPV in the country ever since its inception. Its reliable engine, imposing looks, practical cabin, convenience features, etc are some of the reasons why people prefer it. In fact, it became the most popular MPV for commercial fleet operators due to its low running and maintenance costs. Today, the Japanese carmaker even has a Toyota Hycross model which is a premium version of the regular Innova Crysta. Therefore, it is interesting to witness the electric avatar as well.

Toyota Innova Crysta EV
This post comes from autojournal_india on Instagram. It captures a unique and interesting video clip of the electric and ICE versions of the Innova side-by-side. While the overall silhouette is almost identical, there are some key distinctions to differentiate the two. The EV version has a sleek front area with a closed-off grille since EVs don’t need fresh air, a sporty black section in the lower part of the bumper, vertically mounted fog lamps, sleek headlamps, dual chrome strips on the bonnet, etc. To highlight its electric credentials, there are blue accents, new alloys and EV badging on various parts of the exterior.

Specs
There are reports suggesting that Toyota has no plans of launching the EV version of its famed Innova Crysta. Instead, in fact, it might be testing it for research purposes. That is the reason why there are no details of the specifications related to this electric powertrain like range, battery or performance. Moreover, the Innova Crysta was underpinned by the IMV2 platform with a ladder-on-frame chassis. But electric cars generally stay away from this construction as it is heavy and has limited space to place the battery. As a result, the efficiency and range would bear a negative impact.

What We Think
We would love to see the electric avatar of this iconic MPV in our market. However, we know that Toyota is currently focusing on hybrid powertrains. In fact, it has even ditched the diesel mill with the new Innova Hycross. This is a clear indication that Toyota will utilise the hybridisation phase before transitioning to pure electric. In fact, it is the only major carmaker in the world which is, sort of, lagging behind in the electric race. Instead, it is also planning to make use of hydrogen to manufacture eco-friendly vehicles. We shall keep an eye out on how the Japanese car marque goes about its business in times to come.
