Toyota is working on an electric version of the Innova Crysta. Now, its concept prototype has been spotted on the road for the first time.
Recently, Toyota launched the Innova Hycross in Indonesia as Innova Kejing Zenix. It is expected to be launched in India (with hybrid tech) as Innova Crysta Hycross. The company is also investing in developing pure EVs and PHEVs. It showcased an all-electric Innova concept prototype at Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) in Jakarta this year. Now, the Toyota Innova Crysta Electric Concept Prototype has been spotted on the road. It looks similar to its ICE-powered sibling and features a closed-off grille at the front with blue accents.

Toyota Innova is very popular in India and other South Asian markets. An electric model is bound to get many users interested. Toyota might use the older platform to make pure EVs. The outgoing Innova Crysta is underpinned by IMV2 ladder-on-frame architecture. It can accommodate both petrol and diesel powertrains. According to recent details, the Innova Crysta Electric concept prototype is currently undergoing tests on roads. If everything works out, we will see more electric and hybrid versions of the popular Toyota vehicles (SUVs and pickup trucks).
The Japanese giant is unlikely to launch an electric version of the Innova Crysta. Henry Tanoto (Vice President Director, Toyota Astra Motor Indonesia) has confirmed that the concept MPV is ‘merely a study’ that is aimed at raising the popularity of EVs. “Kijang Innova Electric will not go on sale and has been built as a concept for the purpose of engineering development only. Suwandy further added that the Innova EV concept is being used for research and development of future EVs that are being readied for the region,” said Anton Jimmi Suwandy, marketing director, Toyota Astra Motor, Indonesia.

The Toyota Innova Crysta Electric prototype is a great move by Toyota to stay relevant in the auto market in the coming years. OGs like GM and Ford are already offering electric vehicles (based on ladder-frame chassis) in North American markets. Toyota has already unveiled the Innova Hycross with a hybrid powertrain option. It sports a modern monocoque chassis with an FWD layout. Since the old-school construction restricts space for batteries, the Japanese giant has a big challenge on its hands. The robustness of ladder-frame chassis is very important across segments like MPVs, SUVs, and pickup trucks.
