Customers will be able to get a hybrid HiLux and Fortuner from next year. However, it will be mild-hybrid technology.
Both the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner are finally getting hybrid power options. As per recent reports, Toyota is planning to launch the 2024 Toyota Hilux and 2024 Toyota Fortuner with mild-hybrid technology in Australia. However, this technology will only offer minor fuel savings. The petrol-electric Toyota hatchbacks and SUVs with traditional hybrid models offer greater fuel efficiency.

Mild Hybrid Versions of Toyota Fortuner and Hilux in Pipeline
Mild-hybrid vehicles use a small electric motor to provide additional thrust to the engine. This means the vehicle cannot be driven on purely-electric power, even at low speeds. However, the electric motor assists the conventional engine to offer a stronger performance without working harder. This, in turn, helps in reducing fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions. It is currently unclear if the diesel engine with mild-hybrid assistance will offer significant fuel and emissions savings.
Reportedly, Toyota is considering all types of electric technology for HiLux, including full electrification. However, it is unclear if the traditional hybrid models would work for the Hilux. The 2024 Toyota Hilux is expected to be powered by a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system. On the other hand, the 2024 Toyota Fortuner will likely get a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder with mild-hybrid technology. Notably, Toyota has not yet confirmed the Toyota HiLux Hybrid and Fortuner Hybrid for Australia.

Hilux and Fortuner
Currently, the Hilux comes with the same diesel engine as the Fortuner. This is a 2.7-liter mill that outputs a healthy 201 hp and 420 Nm (500 Nm with automatic transmission) of peak power and torque. This engine could be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. All the variants of the Hilux come with a 4-wheel drive as standard. There is no petrol engine as on the Fortuner. The prices of the Hilux range from Rs 33.99 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 36.80 lakh, ex-showroom.
What We Think
With a clear focus on electrification, it’s commonplace for global car brands to roll out electric versions of their popular offerings. Toyota, though, is clearly a late entrant to the world of electric vehicles. That said, things could take a drastic turn with the advent of the Tacoma EV next year. Moreover, full electrification of models like the Fortuner and Hilux is still a while away. However, the launch of the mild-hybrid version will definitely be a step in the right direction.
