The airbags of a Toyota Fortuner in a recent crash didn’t deploy. That doesn’t automatically mean that there was any issue with them. There are multiple reasons why the airbags of cars don’t activate during a collision. We shall get into those reasons in a bit. Firstly, it is prudent to look into the details of the crash. Here are the details.

Toyota Fortuner Airbags Didn’t Deploy
This post comes from mymotorgaadi on Instagram. It captures the visuals of a Toyota Fortuner in a horrific condition. In fact, it is lying on the ground sideways. It is clear that the crash caused it to topple over. The details of the crash are not available. Still, the host mentions that no one was seriously injured in this accident. That is quite impressive since the condition of the 7-seat SUV is quite brutal. The reason for people surviving this crash includes the appropriate functioning of seatbelts and the availability of headrests.

Why Airbags Don’t Deploy in Minor Crashes?
You must’ve seen many instances where the airbags don’t deploy despite a collision. Now, there could be many reasons for this. Here are some most common factors in the deployment of airbags:
- In minor crashes at low speeds, the seatbelts will do the job of preventing the passengers’ movements. Hence, injuries will be avoided without the need to deploy airbags.
- In fact, airbags can cause more damage than the actual crash due to the sudden release which could cause neck injuries. Therefore, these are designed to activate only in high-speed crashes where injuries would otherwise be fatal.
- Deployment of airbags also depends on other factors like vehicle speed, vehicle direction, location of the sensors, whether or not passengers are wearing seatbelts, etc.
- In crashes where cars hit a small animal or just the bumper, airbags don’t open up.
- Rear and side collisions generally don’t warrant airbag deployment.
- If a child or a small person is sitting close to the airbag, modern electrical systems prevent the airbags from opening.
- In some crashes, even the electrical wires or other related components could also get damaged which are needed to carry the signal from sensors to the ECU to inform that airbag activation is needed.
- Finally, there is a real possibility of a manufacturing or design defect which is the fault of the car manufacturer.

Author’s Note
We must take the aforementioned factors into consideration before jumping to conclusions about why the airbags of a car in a collision didn’t deploy. In some cases, they don’t get deployed because they are designed that way. Not all crashes warrant the activation of airbags. Therefore, we see many cases where they don’t open up. In all likelihood, the chances of airbag failure due to some manufacturing defect are very minor. Carmakers put a lot of time and effort into testing the efficiency and working of all components.
