The Fortuner has been the most popular 7-seat off-roader in India for the longest time
The Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport (GR-S) has been revealed for the South African market. Note that the GR-S version was due for a long time. This is particularly important since it has already been on sale in many international markets like Thailand and Indonesia for years now. Also, the GR-S iteration of the Hilux is currently in its third version. Clearly, the Fortuner was lagging behind with this special edition trim. The official launch will take place in March and we might get it in India thereafter. For now, let us take a look at the details of what it gets.
Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport Revealed
On the outside, there are barely any major changes to the Fortuner. It continues to get sleek LED headlamps at the front with a sporty and contoured GR bumper which houses fog lamps and LED lights on the extreme edges. There is a GR grille with honeycomb pattern. The skid plate section underneath the bumper lends the SUV a rugged demeanour. Moving to the sides showcases a floating roof effect with black side pillars, side steps for enhanced ingress and egress characteristics, prominent wheel arches, massive 18-inch GR alloy wheels and roof rails. At the rear, it continues to carry those sleek LED taillamps and a sporty GR bumper.
Specs
Since this is the GR-Sport iteration of the Toyota Fortuner, there is a slight calibration of the engine. It continues to use the familiar 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel mill but produces 225 hp and 550 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. Performing the transmission duties is a recalibrated 6-speed automatic gearbox which powers all four wheels. This provides immense capabilities to the large SUV to go just about anywhere.
Other changes to the SUV include mono-tube shock absorbers, GR-tuned off-road suspension, GR front and rear bumpers, GR-themed Alcantara sports seats and metallic pedals. While these components are confirmed, it could even get a leather-wrapped GR steering wheel, GR badges inside the cabin and red stitching for the upholstery to lend it that enthusiastic vibe. All in all, we will get to know more details at the launch in the coming months. Thereafter, it will also be intriguing to see whether or not the Japanese carmaker brings it to our shores.
