Navigation of Toyota Fortuner onto Stairs
Some news channels have reported this incident. This took place when a family was returning from the Nilgiris in Ooty, Tamil Nadu. They were stuck in a traffic jam. To look for an alternative, they took the help of the navigation app. They started following the route suggested by this app. However, after some time, the driver of the Fortuner found himself on a flight of stairs. Somehow, the route suggested by the app took the car onto the pedestrian path. Realizing what had happened, the driver wanted to reverse the car into the main road. However, we was unable to do so due to a lack of skills. All this information was reported by the Police who had to extricate the vehicle.

The Police constable said, “While the technology they were using did not point them towards the bridle path, they thought that there was a shortcut, unmindful of the fact that the street they were trying to navigate was a walking path – a feature of the Nilgiris’ major towns used by pedestrians to reach important locations.” Thankfully no injury to the passengers or damage to the SUV were reported in this case and the issue was resolved without any fuss.

MapMyIndia CEO Comments
MapMyIndia CEO, Rohan Verma commented via a tweet that, “Such incidents are sad, and our heart goes out to the people who suffered. I am not saying Google is horrible, so don’t get me wrong. But I do believe that unfortunately, most people think Google Maps is the ONLY option for navigation and depend on it, for better or worse, which many times lead to such dangerous incidents.” He mentions that MapMyIndia offers advanced safety features such as 3D Junction Views, alerts for road speed limits, speed cameras, speed breakers, potholes, and sharp curves. As a result, the entire journey becomes safer. Note that this app has a higher rating than Google Maps on App Store and Play Store and has received recognition with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar App Award.

Author’s Note
Such incidents keep cropping up from time to time. However, since we don’t know the full details of this case, we would refrain from commenting. All we can say is that one must always remain vigilant while driving and not follow the navigation system blindly. Sometimes, there are some things that could go wrong. However, over 99% of the time, navigation systems are reliable and offer the best route with the latest updates. Hence, we can consider this hard luck.
