Toyota has been facing slow sales of the Toyota Etios Liva soon after the launch in India besides being a promising small car. However, the sales of Toyota Etios sedan has been better compared to the Liva sales. The reason behind this is the fact that a small car buyer expects a lower running cost (fuel cost) for his day-to-day car, whereas a sedan buyer is less concerned than the small car buyer. But Toyota hasn’t taken too long to understand the market sentiment of Indian car buyers amongst the rising petrol prices and interest rates. The key to a better sales number for Toyota Etios sedan and Liva hatchback might be a fuel efficient CRDI diesel engine, which Toyota already has ready for it.
Toyota will launch the Etios Liva Hatchback and Etios Sedan with their diesel engine variants on 9th Sep 2011 in India. The diesel engine will be a 1.4 Litre D4D engine which powers the Toyota Corolla Altis sedan, but the turbocharger and engine tuning will be much different for the Etios & Etios Liva. The engine is expected to be fitted with a fixed geometry turbocharger for lower cost and will deliver close to 75 BHP of max power and 180 Nm of torque (approx.). One interesting thing to look out for will be the mileage of the Diesel variants of Etios and Liva, because with a VGT and 89 BHP of power output, the same engine delivers over 21 KMPL of mileage on Altis. So with a much less weight cars like Etios and Liva, the mileage figures may just be the highest in their segment.
On the price front, the Etios and Liva are expected to be priced higher than the Petrol counterparts by about Rs.70,000 to Rs 100,000. Which means that we can expect price tags of Etios Diesel Sedan approx. between Rs. 5.8 Lakhs to Rs. 7.5 Lakhs, while the pricing of the Etios Liva Diesel can be between Rs. 4.8 Lakhs to Rs. 6.8 Lakhs ex-showroom. With aggressive pricing and Diesel option, the Etios sedan will be able to pose better competition to segment leading Maruti Swift Dzire and the Liva will be able to stand strong against the New Swift Diesel and Figo Diesel which are strong selling cars in their segment.
