We have seen the loss of quite a few diesel SUVs stepping into the BS6 era, but here’s a list of top five fuel efficient diesel automatic SUVs in the budget of Rs 10-20 lakh that you can still find in India.
India has primarily been a diesel market for many years and our SUVs too have been mostly diesel all these years. India also loves fuel efficient cars and considering our newest love for SUVs, diesel SUVs made great sense for our market. However, there has been a recent shift towards petrol SUVs as a lot of manufacturers ditched diesel engines stepping into the BS6 era. That saw the discontinuation of very fuel efficient SUVs like the Duster diesel and the Vitara Brezza diesel. Both are now petrol-only models. So if you are in the market looking for a fuel efficient diesel SUV, you have much lesser options than before. Gladly, there are still some diesel SUVs that will be there in our market for a quite a few more years. Here we have compiled a list of top five fuel efficient diesel automatic SUVs in the budget of Rs 10-20 lakh.
Tata Nexon
The compact SUV segment still has quite a few diesel offerings like the Venue, Ecosport, XUV300 and the Tata Nexon. Among these, the Tata Nexon is the most fuel efficient of the lot and among only two to be offered with an automatic gearbox option. The Tata Nexon is powered by a 1.5L, four-cylinder diesel engine that puts out 110hp and 260Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed AMT gearbox and has an ARAI-rated mileage of 22.4kmpl. The Tata Nexon diesel automatic retails in India in the price range of Rs 9.80-Rs 12.70 lakh. It is the most affordable SUV in this list.
Mahindra XUV300
The other car in the compact SUV segment to be offered with a diesel automatic powertrain is the Mahindra XUV300 and it is also one of the most fuel efficient SUVs around. The Mahindra XUV300 is powered by a 1.5L diesel engine that puts out 113hp and 300Nm of torque. The XUV300 has the most torque in its segment and the engine comes mated to a 6-speed AMT gearbox. The XUV300 has an ARAI-calimed mileage of 20kmpl which is really good. Mahindra offers the XUV300 diesel automatic in three variants with prices starting from Rs 9.99 lakh and going up to Rs 12.69 lakh
Hyundai Creta
The Hyundai Creta has been one of the biggest launches this year. The mid-size SUV segment still has quite a few options for diesel automatic SUVs and some of them quite fuel-efficient too. The one that stands out for us is the Hyundai Creta which is powered by a 1.5L diesel engine that produces 113hp and 250Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and it has an ARAI-rated mileage of 18.5kmpl. That makes it one of the most fuel-efficient in its class. The diesel automatic Creta is available in two variants, ranging between Rs 15.99-Rs 17.2 lakh.

Kia Seltos
The Kia Seltos is the sister car of the Hyundai Creta and both these SUVs are identical under the skin. The Kia Seltos also comes powered by the same 1.5L diesel engine with the exact same specs of 113hp and 250Nm of torque. Here also, the engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, the Seltos has a slightly lesser ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 17.8kmpl which is still not poor by any means. The Kia Seltos is also extremely good value for money considering its looks and equipment on offer. Kia offers the diesel automatic Seltos in three variants with its price starting from Rs 13.54 lakh and going up to Rs 17.34 lakh.

Tata Harrier
The last SUV on this list is the Tata Harrier and it is one of the newest entrants in the diesel automatic SUV space. Earlier, the Harrier was only available with a manual gearbox. The Harrier is also the most powerful of the lot with a 2.0L diesel engine that produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and it has an ARAI-rated mileage of 17kmpl. That’s quite good from a powerful 2.0L diesel engine. Tata offers the Harrier diesel automatic in three variants (which are also available in dual-tone and dark editions color schemes) with its prices ranging from Rs 16.25 lakh to 20.25 lakh. The also makes it the most expensive SUV in this list.
