After the government of India brought in the EV policy which reduced import taxes on electric cars, Tesla is eager to commence its operations in our market.
A Tesla Model X was recently spotted in India on the streets of Gurugram. Tesla has been eyeing the Indian market for a long time now. However, due to dissatisfaction with the exorbitant import duties up until a few weeks ago, it was unable to launch its cars here. The prices would’ve been extremely high. But the Govt. of India recently introduced the EV policy which mentions the reduction of duties on imports provided the foreign carmakers pledge an investment worth $500 million in developing the local manufacturing and supply chain.

Tesla Model X Spotted in India
This post comes from weargurgoan_ on Instagram. It captures clear visuals of a Tesla Model X plying on Gurugram streets. The EV is wearing a Delhi registration plate. Obviously, this is a private import since Tesla is yet to officially sell cars here. While exact details are not available, it is possible that someone might have imported it after the reduction in import tariffs. Otherwise, the over 100% taxes easily double the price of the original model. The Model X is an electric SUV which comes in 2WD and AWD configurations.
Not The First Time
Note that this is not the first time a Tesla car has been spotted in India. In the last couple of years, we have seen Tesla cars testing on our roads regularly. For instance, back in 2021, a red-coloured Tesla Model 3 was seen in Gurugram. It had a red number plate which is issued to a brand-new car as a temporary registration number. Hence, people have been importing Tesla cars over the years. It is understandable if you are an EV buff and budget is no constraint. But, finally, the mass market will get exposed to Tesla cars once the American EV giant commences its operations in India.
