China is well-known for creating replicas of luxury automobiles and this Tesla Cybertruck copycat is yet another example of that trend. A prominent Chinese automaker, Dongfeng, has come up with an evident replica of the electric pickup truck from Tesla. However, there are some distinct differences in the exterior styling and interior layout. To be honest, it was just a matter of time before we would see something like this from China. Let us take a look at the details of this case.
Tesla Cybertruck Copycat from China
Interestingly, this pickup truck was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show a couple of weeks ago. Overall, the body of this truck seems evidently similar to the Tesla Cybertruck. However, it doesn’t come with exposed stainless steel like the American counterpart. Still, there is an LED light bar at the front which spans the width of the fascia, a block-like stance, a rugged skid plate underneath the bumper, and vertically-oriented headlamps on either side of the bumper. On the sides, there are massive round wheel arches with large wheels wrapped in off-roading tyres. The side profile is devoid of any characteristic creases.
At the rear, the party trick is the tent which pops out of the hood of the trunk much like the original Cybertruck. It caters to adventure seekers who would dare to go out on camping expeditions in a pickup truck. What is even more impressive is the fact that this Cybertruck imposter produces a mammoth 1,305 hp of peak power. It is based on the skateboard EV platform from Dongfeng. On the inside, it gets a rectangular steering wheel with a minimalist design. It remains to be seen if we will be able to witness the production version of this unique contraption.
Our View
I have been reporting about the copycat models of Chinese carmakers for years now. Generally, they go for the exact replicas by keeping a keen eye on the details. However, this time around, they have tried to introduce a slightly more practical and regular iteration of the radical original Cybertruck. Mostly, these lookalike models do well in the domestic Chinese market. Hence, I shall keep an eye out for when it appears in the production form.
