Tata Motors Bags Order for Supplying 10,000 Tigor Electric Cars to Government

Remember we discussed the Government’s plans to have only EVs running on public roads by 2030 recently? Well, in what could be a huge push to this plan, it has come to light that Tata Motors has bagged an order for supplying as many as 10,000 electric vehicles Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). EESL comes under the administration of the Ministry of Power. The first batch of these cars, which will comprise of 500 units, will be supplied in November this year. The remaining cars will be delivered at a later date. This upcoming Tata car is based on the Tigor Sportback sub-4 metre compact sedan that was launched earlier this year. Here, in this post, we have put together all the details of the Tata Tigor Electric car.

Tata Motors has quoted a price of Rs 10.16 lakh (excluding GST) for the Tigor EV. While the Government might introduce a lowered tax structure for EVs in the coming days, the Tata Tigor Electric car, going by the current tax slab, will have cost Rs 11.2 lakh if you also include the GST to the car’s price. Of course, this EV is much costlier than the petrol and Diesel versions. However, there’s no denying the green credentials this car will boast. While it will not enter the passenger car market just yet, the Govt. might be seen offering heavy rebates and subsidies to promote the sale of electric cars. The upcoming Tata Tigor electric car will offer a five-year warranty.

Regulars here would remember that we have already posted in great detail about the electric Tiago. It has been developed by Tata’s UK division – Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC). Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover has been working with TMETC on the development of electric powertrains. Of course, Tata’s affordable manufacturing processes and JLR’s high technical prowess will together greatly benefit the future electric cars from the company. The Tiago electric car is likely to launch in the Indian car market by mid-2018.

The Tata Electric car is expected to share most of the technology with the Tiago EV. This means it could get a liquid-cooled 85 kW electric drive motor that outputs a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The car will enjoy a top speed of 135 kmph and will be able to go from 0 to 100 kmph in less than 11 seconds.  Both the Tiago and the Tigor are based on the company’s low-cost platform. This platform is in turn based on the XO platform. Thanks to the low-cost architecture, the company has been able to offset some of the high cost of the battery.

Tata Tigor Electric Car Launch Date

The Tigor EV won’t go on sale at least before a year. However, you will definitely soon start seeing the car on public roads as the company will start supplying the electric vehicle starting next month. In the first batch, only 500 cars will be delivered to the Government. However, the company will supply a total of 10,000 units over the next 2 years. There are very good chances that the Tigor electric car would be present at the Delhi Auto Expo 2018.

The 10,000 units of the electric Tigor will replace the petrol- and Diesel-powered car that the government officials have been using. Currently, estimates suggest that there are as many as 5 lakh Government cars in use. Of course, it will take a really long time to replace all of these with electric vehicles. That said, it’s definitely a big step ahead in the right direction.

Tata Tigor Electric Car Price

In the winning bid, Tata Motors quoted a price of Rs 10.16 lakh per car to the Government. This price is exclusive of the GST. It will cost Rs 11.2 lakh if you factor in the GST. The Tigor EV won’t go on sale at least before a year. We are pretty sure the company will initially focus on delivering the 10,000 units to the Government first. We are pretty sure the electric car will cost lesser when it goes on sale in near future. We say this because we are pretty sure that the Government would want to push sales of EVs by offering huge subsidies and rebates. This will help achieve the all-electric car target by 2030. A high sales of the Tigor EV will also motivate other car companies to come up with EVs.

Tata Tigor Electric Car Specifications

Tata Motors is yet to reveal the exact specifications of the electric Tigor. However, there is a very high chance that it will use the same powertrain as the Tiago EV. The e-Drive powertain for the Tiago comprises of an 85 kW electric motor that outputs a peak torque of 200 Nm. The motor comes mated to a single-speed gearbox. The rechargeable batteries will have a range of 100 KMs. While not much, but it’s still enough for usage in an urban environment.

Tata Tigor Electric Car Top Speed and 0 to 100 KMPH

Like the electric Tiago, the Tigor EV will enjoy a top speed of 135 KMPH. Again, while not much, it’s enough for usage in an urban environment. Also, the fact that a peak torque of 200 Nm will be available right from the lowest engine speed means that the upcoming model will be a zippy performer. Expect a 0 to 100 KMPH time of less than 11 seconds.

Tata Tigor Electric Car Exterior and Interior

Well, there won’t be any change in the design. However, the EV will look slightly different owing to many small changes in the styling of the exterior and the interior. The exterior will, of course, have a different set of wheels. Also, it might have a set of decals to announce its green credentials. On the inside, the car will have a different instrument cluster. This will be necessitated by the new powerplant. Even the gear lever will be replaced by a drive mode selector. There shouldn’t be any change in the interior space. The car will most likely continue to offer a seating capacity of five.
