There was a time when Tata Sierra was the talk of the town from regular buyers to the Prime Minister of the country
In this video, we come across the Tata Sierra from back in 1995 when it was used as the official PM car. In India, a few Tata cars like the Sierra and Safari were extremely popular in the 1990s and 2000s. As a matter of fact, they were seen as aspirational SUVs. Since there were not many foreign carmakers in the country back then, we used to see these SUVs in all echelons of society. This even incorporates the convoy of the Prime Minister of India during ceremonial occasions like the Republic Day Parade. Let us take a look at the details here.
Tata Sierra as Official PM Car
We are able to relish these visuals courtesy of dc.mototech on Instagram. The video clip has a snippet from the Republic Day Parade from 1995. There are a bunch of vehicles in the convoy of the then Prime Minister of India. However, what will swell your chest with pride is the fact that almost every car in this motorcade is an Indian vehicle. This includes cars like the Hindustan Ambassador, Tata Sumo, Tata Sierra and the Sierra in some specific versions. We see the security personnel standing at the doors of the Tata Sumo SUVs.
It is clear that this arrangement has been specifically choreographed for this parade. We understand the implications of such stunts in normal environments. However, this is a special occasion where the people undergo months of training to demonstrate this level of control. They have to put up a show for huge crowds and dignitaries from many parts of the world. Even though it was not all that popular a few decades ago, it is now relayed across the world for everyone to see. What will be pretty interesting to see is whether or not we see the newest Sierra in the convoy of the Indian PM in the coming months.
My View
I must admit this video clip certainly invokes a feeling of nostalgia for the era gone by. This is the beginning of how monikers like the Tata Sierra and Sumo achieved iconic status in India. In fact, the Safari, which followed after the Sierra, has been resurrected to be sold as a new-age SUV for today’s customers. Similarly, the Tata Sierra was recently showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Hence, we will soon get the production-spec version and launch in India. Let us keep an eye out for that.
