As per sales data for the month of January 2024, Tata Punch emerges as the highest-selling SUV in India. That is an incredible achievement. The Indian automobile market has always been dominated by Maruti Suzuki products. In fact, up until a few years ago, no car would’ve dared to enter the top 10 list apart from Maruti cars. But things have changed. Hyundai now consistently features a couple of cars on the top 10 highest-selling cars list. More recently, Tata Motors is also putting its cars on this celebrated list. But to secure the second spot is quite extraordinary.

Tata Punch is Highest-Selling SUV in India
The recent sales charts inform that the Indian carmaker was able to sell a whopping 17,978 units of the Punch micro SUV in India in January 2024. This is up 50% from the same month last year when it sold 12,006 units. For the month gone by, this puts the Punch at the second spot behind Maruti Baleno which sold 19,630 units. This is a testament to just how popular the Punch is in India. Its SUV-ish silhouette, 5-star safety rating at Global NCAP and availability of multiple powertrains are some of the main reasons for its massive success.

Apart from that, the Nexon was able to secure fourth place with 17,182 units sold in January 2024. That makes it two Tata products in the top 5 highest-selling cars in our market. The only other carmaker in the top 10 is Mahindra with its Scorpio at ninth place. All other cars, unsurprisingly, belong to Maruti Suzuki. Interestingly, Hyundai has dropped out of this list. The mighty Hyundai Creta sits at the twelfth spot for January 2024 with 13,212 sales. This is not low by any standards. It’s just that the market is growing and the demand and sales are extremely high.

Author’s Note
Even though the above data is based on dealer dispatches and not actual sales, there’s no denying that Tata Motors has been getting closer to Hyundai on the popularity charts. With its vehicles doing so well, it might just be a matter of time before it emerges as the second-largest carmaker in India. But Hyundai is putting up a great fight. Overall, the industry is growing rapidly after a slump of almost two years due to the pandemic and semiconductor chip shortage. But it is now on track with massive sales. With tons of new launches planned for this year including EVs, the signs are positive for both, Tata Motors and the overall market.
