So the new 2017 Tata Nexon is here! With a design that’s sure to catch every eyeball out there, the new Tata compact SUV has created a huge buzz ahead of its launch next month. The Nexon is basically a sub-4-metre SUV that has the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford Ecosport in its sights. Regulars here would know that we’ve already come up with comparisons between the Nexon and its two main rivals. In this post here, we’ve decided to compare the new compact SUV with the Maruti Ignis. True, both of these cars are far from direct competitors but we’re pretty sure there will be at least some price overlap between the two cars. Our Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis comparison here should highlight all the differences between these two models.
Like we said, the Nexon will become a direct rival to the Brezza and the EcoSport. Currently, the Maruti compact SUV enjoys segment-topping sales. The EcoSport, too, has been one of the most popular SUV crossovers around and was once the undisputed leader of its segment. The Nexon will have to outclass both of these to establish a really strong foothold in the market. The Nexon might even face some heat from other popular models like the Maruti Baleno, Maruti Ignis and the Hyundai Creta. True, none of these are direct rivals of the new compact SUV. However, thanks to a slight price overlap, the Nexon might end up eating into the sales of some these cars as well. Our Nexon vs Ignis comparison here should help you understand how these two compare.’
The Ignis was launched in January this year. While this sub-compact-SUV hasn’t really set sales charts on fire, no, not by Maruti standards, it has definitely garnered a fair amount of fan following. The Ignis looks funky, offers decent cabin space and is available with a gazillion customization options. The Nexon looks at least as funky as the Nexon. The well sculpted body looks far more radical, and attractive, than what we’ve seen on any sub-4-metre so far. Also, going by the prices of the Tiago and the Tigor, Tata will probably launch the Nexon at an attractive price point. These are reasons enough for the two to become a really unlikely pair of rivals, no?

Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis – Price Comparison
Tata Nexon Price (estimated)* | ₹ 5.85 lakh – 9.45 lakh |
Maruti Ignis Price* | ₹ 4.56 lakh – 7.54 lakh |
*all prices ex-showroom
Maruti has priced the Ignis pretty aggressively. The entry-level model costs a little over Rs 4.50 lakh. Thanks to the competitive pricing, the base Ignis ends up rivaling even some B-segment hatchbacks. On the other hand, the top-end Ignis costs Rs 7.54 lakh. But there is a definite price overlap between the Ignis and the Nexon. The Nexon has a starting price of Rs 5.85 lakh and its top-end model costs Rs 9.45 lakh. True, the Ignis enjoys a definite price advantage here but let’s not forget that the Nexon is from half a segment above and offers more in terms of space, features and power.

Torque | 170 Nm | 113 Nm |

While both the models here boast a 1.2-litre Petrol engine, it’s the Nexon that offers a higher performance. Compared to the naturally aspirated K-series 1.2-litre engine of the Ignis, the Nexon offers a new 1.2-litre turbocharged motor that offers more power and torque. Only the Ignis gets an automatic gearbox (an AMT). However, the Ignis gets a 5-speed Manual Transmission compared to the Nexon’s 6-speed gearbox.
Diesel
Specifications | Tata Nexon | Maruti Ignis |
Engine | 1.5-litre Turbo Diesel | 1.3-litre DDIS Turbo Diesel |
Power | 108 BHP | 74 BHP |
Torque | 260 Nm | 190 Nm |

The diesel engine displaces 1.5 litres and makes 108BHP power and 260Nm torque. It will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox only.
Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis – Ground Clearance
Tata Nexon | 209 mm |
Maruti Ignis | 180 mm |
This is one area where the Nexon is a clear winner. With a ground clearance of 209 mm, the Nexon enjoys better clearance then the Ignis. It’s even better than the Ford EcoSport (200 mm) in this aspect. The high ground clearance will be a great boon while tackling pothole-ridden roads and over rather mindlessly created speedhumps.

Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis – Mileage Comparison
Car | Mileage (petrol) | Mileage (diesel) |
Tata Nexon | 17 KMPL (estimated) | 21.5 KMPL (estimated) |
Maruti Ignis | 20.89 KMPL (ARAI) | 26.80 KMPL (ARAI) |
The Ignis offers quite high mileage and wins this comparison hands down. However, let’s not forget that the Nexon offers a lot more power. Also, an important factor to consider in the case of Nexon is that Tata has equipped the car with driving modes. This will have an impact on the car’s mileage, which is crucial in this comparison.
Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis – Dimensions
Dimensions | Tata Nexon | Maruti Ignis |
Length (mm) | 3,995 | 3,700 |
Width (mm) | 1,811 | 1,690 |
Height (mm) | 1,607 | 1,595 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2,498 | 2,435 |
When we compare the Nexon’s dimensions with those of the Ignis, a few things come out on top. First off, the Nexon is as much as 295 mm longer than the Ignis. However, at 2,435 mm, the wheelbase of the Ingis is only 63 mm shorter. In terms of width, the Nexon (1811mm) is much wider than the Ignis (1,734mm). Both cars have close to same height. Nexon’s larger dimensions should translate into a more spacious cabin. However, the Ignis still offers a sufficiently airy cabin for its size.
Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis – Exterior Design Comparison
The Nexon sports a cohesive design. This car does not pretend to be an SUV. A clear sign of this is the rounded wheel arches which add muscle to this car as well. The front end looks quite nice as elements such as the grille and headlamps look like one complete styling element. On the side, the car’s coupe-like roofline gives this car an athletic stance. The rear of the car features a chrome strip running across the width of the car. This chrome strip outlines the taillamps too. Rest, the rear looks clean and hence, quite nice. The Nexon’s jacked-up stance gives it the look and feel of a crossover. Overall, we can say that this is a nice design indeed.
The Ignis looks quirky, but in a nice way. We like how the designers have pushed the wheels at the very edges to free up more space on the inside. Bits like the big, chrome lined grille housing the headlamps, LED daytime running lights, etc. enhance the Ignis’ style quotient. We really like the way the Ignis ends up looking SUV-ish in spite of having the footprint of a hatchback.
Tata Nexon vs Maruti Ignis – Interior Design Comparison
The Nexon’s interior is a spacious-feeling place. The black-grey dual-tone colour scheme is responsible for this. The brushed aluminium inserts on the dashboard, steering wheel and doors trims looks expensive. The centre console is clutter free and has just one floating infotainment screen. A few buttons and dials are all that you can see on the centre console. All this adds to the sense of spaciousness to the cabin. A job well done by Tata.
The Ignis, on the other hand, gets a rather funky dashboard. We’re seeing a new steering wheel in a Maruti after a really long time. A combination of black and ivory white is what the Ignis’ cabin gets. Body coloured highlights for the cabin are on offer too. Also, Maruti offers the Ignis with a touchscreen infotainment system at least in the top end trims.
