Though not confirmed, it is likely that the Tata Nexon JTP will eventually make its debut in India with the same turbo-petrol engine but with more power.
A recent set of spy images show a heavily camouflaged test mule of the Tata Nexon on the streets of Coimbatore. These images have once again sparked the debate of a possible launch of the JTP variant of this sub-four-meter compact SUV in the Indian market. Though Tata Motors has confirmed that the same is in consideration for a market launch but has so far made no concrete announcement regarding the timeline of its debut.
The mere fact that the test mule was seen on the streets of Coimbatore, the home of Jayem Automotives, hints towards the same being a JTP variant. Jayem Automotives has been working in collaboration with Tata Motors to launch performance versions of the latter’s passenger vehicles. The first model launches under the collaboration were the JTP (Jayem Tata Performance) variants of the Tiago and the Tigor last year.

If and when Tata Motors decides to launch the Nexon JTP in the Indian market, we expect the same to feature its standard 1.2-litre, turbo-petrol unit but with a higher power and torque output figures. Currently, the Tata Nexon’s petrol engine churns out 110 BHP of power along with 170 Nm of peak torque. It is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission which is expected to remain the same for the JTP variant as well.

In addition to altering the performance characteristics of the engine, the Tata Nexon JTP is likely to come with a slightly stiffer suspension set-up as well. Apart from this, it is likely to feature cosmetic alterations like revised bumpers, the addition of side-skirts and a slight modification of its interiors. Apart from this, the rest of the specifications are likely to remain the same as before.

All that said, the test mule seen in the images could very well be the BS-VI iteration of the Nexon under test. It is quite likely that Tata Motors has started the development of its BS-VI complaint engines in lieu of the fast-approaching deadline of the same.
