In this post, I am comparing the Tata Nexon iCNG and Tata Punch iCNG on the basis of specs, prices, features, design and dimensions. Both these are popular products from the Indian auto giant. In fact, in their respective ICE guises, these feature on the list of the highest-selling products in the country month after month. Hence, launching the cost-effective CNG iteration of these SUVs made a lot of sense. Also, in general, people are switching to CNG cars to lower their running costs amidst constantly rising fuel prices. Hence, carmakers are coming up with CNG versions of their successful cars. For now, let us delve deep into this comparison between the Tata siblings.
Tata Nexon iCNG vs Punch iCNG – Price
We must start by looking at the prices of these cars since that is the most important criterion for a whole lot of customers. The Tata Nexon iCNG ranges from Rs 8.99 lakh and Rs 14.59 lakh, ex-showroom. In fact, the Indian auto giant offers all sorts of variants so that buyers get a wide choice. On the other hand, the Punch iCNG has a price tag between Rs 7.23 lakh to Rs 9.90 lakh, ex-showroom. Again, there are myriads of trims for customers to choose from depending on their needs.

Tata Nexon iCNG vs Punch iCNG – Specs
Now let us discuss the specifications. Note that CNG variants of all CNG cars are, essentially, bi-fuel options. Hence, the same petrol engine is used in these cars which the ICE trim comes with. Therefore, the Tata Nexon iCNG comes with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol + CNG engine which generates a decent 100 PS and 170 Nm of peak power and torque. Note that this is the first turbocharged CNG engine in the country. Complimenting this engine is a 6-speed manual transmission. A key thing to mention here is that CNG mills produce significantly less power and torque in comparison to the ICE model. But that difference is minute in this case. Also, the Nexon iCNG gets the dual-cylinder technology. More on that later. The mileage is a cool 24 km/kg.
On the other hand, the Tata Punch iCNG has a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol + CNG mill which churns out a handy 73 PS and 103 Nm of peak power and torque. This engine pairs with a 5-speed manual transmission. The mileage figure is an impressive 26.99 km/kg. Also, remember the dual-cylinder technology I talked about in the Nexon iCNG. It is the same with the Punch iCNG too. Essentially, the carmaker has come up with a unique solution to ensure enough boot space. These cars get two CNG cylinders fitted underneath the boot floor. Previously, there was a single cylinder which ate the boot capacity. But with two small-sized cylinders, the practicality of the SUVs is enhanced severely.

Design and Dimensions
Let us now move on to how these SUVs look. First off, let us experience the Tata Nexon iCNG. Since the Indian automaker had recently updated it, the modern design philosophy is evident. It gets a sleek LED light bar running across the front fascia which culminates into LED DRLs on either side. In fact, I certainly like the fascia with that rugged bumper containing sporty black elements. Note that the main headlamp cluster is located on the extreme edges of the bumper. Completing the front profile is a silver skid plate. On the sides, it gets aero-styled alloy wheels, side body cladding, pronounced wheel arches and black side pillars. Finally, the tail end comprises of a shark fin antenna, a roof-mounted spoiler, a connected LED taillamp via an LED light bar and a sturdy skid plate on the bumper. All in all, it definitely boasts a solid stance.
On the other hand, the Tata Punch iCNG has LED DRLs on the bonnet connected by a chrome strip which underlines the black grille section. Down below, the sporty bumper section lends it a sporty appearance with fog lamps on either side. Apart from that, the main headlamp module is positioned on the edges of the bumper. On the sides, the squared wheel arches elevate its appearance along with alloy wheels, black side pillars and faux roof rails. In fact, the door handle for the rear passengers is placed on the C-pillars. Also, the side cladding looks adventurous. At the rear, it gets a roof-mounted spoiler and a prominent bumper to complete the overall look. In terms of dimensions, the Nexon is significantly larger.

My View
Both the Tata SUVs stem as compelling propositions. You might even be a bit confused due to the price overlap. However, you must understand that choosing between these two entirely depends on your use case. If you are looking for a larger SUV and have a flexible budget, the Nexon makes more sense to you. It is a popular vehicle with tons of modern equipment and enhanced practicality. On the other hand, for those who are on a strict budget but want a car with low running costs, the Punch should be on the radar. It also offers tons of features including safety to pamper the customers. I would suggest you visit your nearest Tata Motors showroom and experience both these products in the flesh.
