A Tata Nexon EV owner shares his ordeals of living with an electric car in India. Nexon EV is the highest-selling electric vehicle in the country by a mile. No other competitor has been able to attract so many customers as the Nexon EV. The main reason is the fact that it is derived from the ICE model of the Nexon which is already among the most popular compact SUVs in our market. Its sales numbers unequivocally confirm that claim. That success has been replicated with the electric Nexon as well. For now, let us take a look at the details of this latest case.
Tata Nexon EV Owner Shows Issues with EVs in India
Before I begin, I must mention that this issue has nothing to do with just the Tata Nexon EV. It is a common conundrum that every EV owner would face. This post comes from arunpanwarhr on Instagram. The host informs the viewers that they are staying at a hotel in a relatively smaller hilly area. He is travelling along with his friends in a new Tata Nexon EV. As is quite common in mountain states, he is staying at a budget-friendly hotel. Unfortunately, his Nexon EV has run out of juice. It currently shows a charging state of 11%.
Now, we know that only a select few premium hotel chains and housing colonies have DC public charging stations from the OEM or charging company itself. For all other applications, you have to prepare a make-shift arrangement. That is exactly what the vlogger also did. He borrowed a flower pot at the property and then inserted an iron bar in it to create earthing for the charging setup. Only after that was he able to connect the charger to the regular socket of the hotel and charge the EV. That is a common issue with charging in most parts of the country at the moment.
Our View
In India, we are still at a nascent stage when it comes to EVs. Sure, the growth is exponential and more players are emerging as we speak. But in comparison to the overall market share of automobiles in general, EVs are very much at the beginning. Among other reasons, charging infrastructure continues to be one of the biggest hurdles preventing mass adoption. Cases like this further highlight the ground reality. I believe it will still take a long time before EVs become a household name.
