The Tata Nexon compact SUV was recently launched. The new compact SUV is already making news, all thanks to the ultra-competitive pricing and a very modern design. We have had a spin in the car (you can read our review here). Few recent reports suggest that an AMT gearbox for Tata Nexon is under development. Now, the Tata Nexon AMT is important because the Vitara Brezza will soon start offering an auto box. The EcoSport already comes with a dual-clutch automatic transmission but with the 1.5-litre petrol engine only. Hence, there’s clearly an opportunity for the Nexon here. Tata will equip not just the petrol but the diesel engine of the Nexon with an AMT gearboxes. Prices will be roughly Rs 50,000 higher than the correspomding manual transmission trim.

Since the reports suggest that Tata Nexon AMT will be out by this fiscal year, we think the Auto Expo 2018 will be the place and time when the car is launched. The company may choose to open the bookings at the Auto Expo 2018 and launch it some time later. Tata needs to launch the AMT models at the earliest as the facelifted Ford EcoSport is likely to come to India in a couple of months. Expect more on this to be revealed in the coming few months. The top-end XZA trims for the AMT model will get a new Mari Gold exterior paint option. It is also likely to offer features like a sunroof (as an optional extra).

Tata Nexon AMT Price in India

The Tata Nexon AMT will command a price premium of roughly Rs 50,000 over the corresponding manual transmission trims. However, using an AMT means the cost will still not be as high as in the case of, say, a torque converter automatic gearbox. Also, since various Tata products are offered with an AMT gearbox already, tweaking it for use on the Nexon should help Tata keep the costs down. What we are also likely to see is an AMT gearbox being offered on the mid and top trims of Nexon petrol and diesel. This way, buyers will be able to own an automatic Nexon while experiencing its full range of features.

Equipped with the petrol engine, don’t expect the Tata Nexon AMT to make any different power and torque figures. Using an AMT will likely make the petrol engine more tractable due to different gearing (expected) than the six-speed manual transmission that is already on offer. This should make the car more useful for driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

The ease of using an AMT as well as its self-shifting capabilities should help Tata Nexon AMT diesel to be more versatile when it comes to being put to use in different conditions. As far Tata Nexon AMT in diesel guise in concerned, don’t expect much of a change from the manual version of the car. This means the Tata Nexon AMT will likely have similar gear ratios as the manual gearbox and similar mileage figures too. All equipping the Nexon diesel with AMT will do is give it self-shifting capabilities and make it look like a better purchase proposition than one of its chief rivals which is available with a diesel engine only.

The Tata Nexon AMT will not see a change in its dimensions. However, it does not need to either. After all, it is the widest car in its class and has the least height too. At 209mm, the Nexon has maximum ground clearance of all cars in its segment. So, expect the Nexon to have sportier driving dynamics than its rivals as well as effective ability to deal with bad roads.
