Tata is going to launch the Hornbill (HBX) micro SUV in India this year, followed by an electric version of it as well.
Tata has some good cars lined up for this year, starting with the Gravitas, Hornbill (HBX) micro SUV, Harrier Petrol and Altroz Turbo. All of them are eagerly awaited because they might be the game changers in their respective segment. Then, there are two EVs planned for the near future as well.
After seeing a good start for the Nexon EV, Tata revealed that it also has the Altroz EV and Hornbill EV planned in future. The electric version of the Altroz was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last year. Both of them will be cheaper than the Nexon EV, which is currently priced from Rs 13.99 Lakhs up to Rs 15.99 Lakhs (ex-showroom).

Tata Hornbill (HBX) EV might actually be the most affordable electric vehicle of India. Speaking about the Altroz EV, Tata confirmed that it might will be priced around Rs 10 Lakhs, possibly below it. The Hornbill EV will be hence more affordable as we could be looking at a possible price range of Rs 7 Lakhs.
Nexon EV gets a 30.2 kWh electric motor, which is expected to come with the Altroz EV as well. However, the Hornbill EV would get a smaller motor with a smaller lithium-ion battery, to save the costs. While the Nexon EV offers a range of 312 kms as claimed, HBX EV might offer around 230-250 kms.
The technology and quality levels will be exactly same as of the Nexon EV. Just the battery specifications, power figures and range will be affected. While the Nexon EV produces 129 PS and 260 Nm of peak torque, the Tata Hornbill EV could produce just around 100 PS. Rest of the electronic powertrain features are also expected to be the same.

Meanwhile, other manufacturers like Hyundai and Maruti are also working towards affordable electric vehicles. Hyundai launched India’s first electric SUV, Kona which received a lukewarm response. The third electric SUV that we have is the MG ZS EV which is placed between Nexon and Kona.
