The Tata Safari is arguably the most recognised Indian SUV brand. First launched in 1998, the Safari has since seen numerous updates to enhance its appeal. However, the ageing SUV has finally been outsold by fresher rivals. Hence, Tata needs an all-new SUV to continue its charge in the mid-size SUV segment. This is exactly where the Hexa comes in. The new Tata Hexa has a crossover-ish look and comes with many new features. It shares its engine with the Safari, which means its on-road performance has to be at least as good. Also, the Hexa gets a 4×4 system to validate its SUV credentials. There’s a lot that the Hexa offers. But can it carry forward the legacy the Safari created? The Hexa has a starting price of Rs 11.99 Lakh for the base model. In comparison, the Safari Storme is almost a lakh and half Rupees cheaper. However, the slightly higher price tag of the Hexa is justified by the fact that it’s a much more modern SUV. This, and also the longer features list and new-age styling. The entry-level XE variant of Hexa gets Varicor 320 motor. The XM and XT trims get the more powerful Varicor 400 engine.
The Safari Storme hasn’t been doing too well on the sales charts. This means there are chances that the discounts can be had at the dealer level. All this will make the Safari even cheaper. However, we still feel the premium commanded by the Hexa is justified in several ways. The top-end Storme, which gets same engine as Hexa, is more than 2 lakhs cheaper.

Tata Hexa vs Tata Safari Storme – Exterior & Interior Comparison
Tata has done a decent job with the Hexa’s design. It has got a crossover-ish touch to it whilst carrying several SUV elements. The 19-inch alloy wheels, body cladding, clamshell hood, in-your-face radiator grille, etc make the Hexa have enough street cred. The Safari, on the other hand, looks like an old school SUV. This isn’t really a bad thing. However, it has started showing its age and hence, lacks flamboyance. We prefer the rugged looks of the Tata Hexa over the dated-looking Safari.
Even the interior of the Hexa is really very good. It is made up of high quality materials and carries several features for passenger comfort. It has an all-black colour scheme. Also, all the three rows get individual AC blowers. Hexa also offers features like a 10-speaker JBL audio system, touchscreen infotainment system and a cooled glovebox. The Safari feels spartan in comparison.
Tata Hexa vs Tata Safari Storme Comparison Verdict
Tata has worked hard to ensure the Hexa comes across as a world class product. While there is a significant price gap between the two, the Hexa offers much more than the Safari. The Hexa looks like a better buy overall. However, Safari still has a strong brand image, which is something even the Hexa will aim to achieve.
- Design – Looks are a matter of personal taste. However, the Hexa looks more modern and should appeal to the metrosexual. The Safari will continue to please old school SUV lovers.
- Features – The Hexa gets many more features than the Safari Storme. The Safari feels spartan in comparison.
- Specifications – The Tata Hexa gets the same engines as the Safari Storme. However, it offers more in the form of an auto ‘box and a more modern 4×4 system. It is also dimensionally larger.
- Price – Hexa commands a significant over the Safari Storme. But the slightly higher price tag is well justified.
So basically, the Tata Hexa seems like a better package.
