Reports confirm that Tata will offer a turbo petrol engine for the Harrier this year. With this, SUV will be available at a more affordable price.
Tata Harrier with its similar styling to the Range Rover has managed to make a good start in its class. Despite it not having an automatic gearbox and a petrol engine, it became an easy favourite for buyers who wanted a sub 20 Lakh SUV.
At the Auto Expo 2020, Tata finally launched the Harrier with an automatic gearbox. Now, reports suggest that Tata will also launch the Harrier Petrol, to expand its group of buyers. It is under development and will be launched by this Diwali.
Tata Harrier will get a 1.5 Litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It is a reworked version of the 1.2 Litre three-cylinder turbo petrol found on Nexon. The engine will produce more around 150 BHP of power. Not the most powerful in the segment.

Further, Harrier Petrol will get drive modes including the Sport Mode. It will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox as well as an automatic gearbox. There are chances of it getting paddle shifters as well. Since there are rumours that Tata is working on a 7-speed DCT for the Altroz, the same set can also come on Harrier.
The rivals of Harrier include MG Hector, Jeep Compass and Mahindra XUV500. The former two already come with a petrol engine. The XUV 500 also used to come with one earlier, but its new generation will get a 2.0 Litre turbo-petrol engine.
In the big SUV space, generally, a lot of buyers drift towards diesel engines. Mainly, because, they are torquey and also more fuel-efficient. However, the demand for petrol is still strong, attributing to around 50% of cars sold. If Tata manages to make Harrier Petrol a fuel efficient car, they could add good sales figures in a very short time.
Recently, Harrier also got a minor facelift along with BS6 engine. The upgrades include a more powerful 2.0 Litre turbo diesel engine, new and bigger alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, an automatic gearbox and new colour options.
