The premium SUV from the Indian auto giant will soon be on offer with diesel, as well as electric powertrain options
In this post, we shall compare the Tata Harrier EV and Harrier diesel on the basis of information available to us. The Indian carmaker has started announcing official trailers for the upcoming Harrier EV. For instance, we saw the EV being driven in a high speed test around a dedicated track. Hence, we know that the launch is not too far away. On the other hand, Harrier, in the ICE avatar, has been the best that Tata Motors has to offer for a long time now. For now, let us compare the two.
Tata Harrier EV vs Harrier Diesel – Specs
We know that the Tata Harrier draws power from the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre turbo diesel mill which generates a familiar 170 PS and 350 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. Performing transmission duties with this engine is either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. However, we are yet to get the details regarding the battery, power, torque and range figures of the Harrier EV. In any case, we can expect a battery capacity of around 75 kWh and a range in the vicinity of 500 km on a single charge. The power and torque can start from 268 PS and 380 Nm, respectively. There will be single-motor 2WD and dual-motor AWD configurations on offer. We shall have to wait a bit longer for all the details.

Some of the main highlights of the electric SUV could be the same as the ICE Harrier since Tata will keep most elements on the outside and inside similar. Having said that, to distinguish the two, we might see some additional features on the Harrier EV in comparison to the Harrier diesel. Finally, on the outside, we will witness minute differences between the electric and ICE variants, but enough to set the two apart.
My View
Choosing between these two avatars of the Tata Harrier will purely be a matter of application. If you live in a city where there is adequate charging infrastructure and you have your own parking space where you can install a home charger, the Harrier EV makes a lot of sense. However, if you travel frequently on highways with scarce EV charging stations, it could be an issue. Also, it will be considerably more expensive than its diesel counterpart. In any case, you can go for either of the two as per your needs.
