Tata Motors has revealed the production-spec CURVV coupe SUV which will be launched on August 7.
The Tata CURVV will be positioned above the Nexon and below the Harrier in our market. It is a coupe SUV which is a first for the mass market. Note that Tata Motors didn’t have a dedicated product in the mid-size SUV space. This category is one of the fastest-expanding spaces. The segment is led by the mighty Hyundai Creta. CURVV aims to challenge the dominance of the Korean carmaker. Apart from that, it wants to expand its portfolio too. Remember that the CURVV will be one of those few products which will be offered in petrol, diesel and electric avatars. The Nexon already comes with all these options too. Let us compare the two in terms of the details we already know.
Tata CURVV vs Nexon Comparison – Specs
The official announcement regarding the specifications of the CURVV ICE or CURVV.ev is not out yet. Still, we believe that the CURVV will get a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine which will produce 125 hp. This is the same engine as the Nexon but in a minutely higher state of tune. There will also be manual and automatic transmission options. Also, the diesel engine from the Nexon will most likely also be carried forward. In fact, the electric avatar of the CURVV will be launched first. The details of the battery pack, electric motor output, range, charging, etc. are not available at this point in time.
The Tata Nexon is offered in three variants – petrol, diesel and electric. The petrol mill is a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine which makes 120 hp and 170 Nm and the diesel engine boasts a 1.5-litre mill which churns out 115 hp and 260 Nm of peak power and torque. Depending on the variant, one could select between a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed AMT or a 7-speed DCT gearbox. It ensures that everyone gets what they are looking for.
In the electric guise, there are two versions – Medium Range (MR) and Long Range (LR) with two battery packs – a 30.2 kWh and a 40.5 kWh. The claimed range is 325 km and 465 km, respectively, on a single charge. The power and torque outputs stand at a cool 127 hp / 215 Nm and 143 hp / 215 Nm, respectively. The charging from 10% to 100% takes 56 mins with a DC fast charger. As standard, you get a 7.3 kW AC charger which juices up the MR trim in 4.3 hours and the LR variant in 6 hours.

Tata CURVV vs Nexon Comparison – Design
Tata CURVV
The Tata CURVV bears a distinct appearance. In fact, during the unveiling yesterday, the design was highlighted. A peek into the interior layout was not offered. However, the exterior styling is quite striking. The first thing you would notice is the connected LED light bar which culminates into LED DRLs on either side. Apart from that, the grille is sleek and the bumper is sliced into two sections via a horizontal partition. On the extreme edges of the bumper, there are vertically stacked LED headlamps which indicate a modern appearance. The lower section of the bumper also contains a large section with a distinct pattern and a piano black finish. All in all, the front profile will certainly make the heads turn.
However, the most attractive aspect has to be the side profile. The sloping roofline toward the rear establishes the coupe silhouette. It gets flush-fitting door handles, prominent wheel arches with black cladding which is also there on the side door panel, stylish side pillars, elegant alloy wheels and an upright stance. At the rear, it gets a shark fin antenna, a connected LED light bar connecting the LED taillamps, a unique roof-mounted spoiler with a break in the centre, an extended bootlid section, a sporty bumper and reflector lights on the extreme edges of the bumper. In the EV iteration, the design for the front fascia and the alloy wheels is slightly different. The two are distinguished by varied badges on the bootlid.
Tata Nexon
On the other hand, we know that the Tata Nexon is already a handsome product. In fact, that is the reason why so many people opt for it. At the front, it possesses those sleek LED DRLs with a slim element connecting them. Again, the LED headlamps are vertically positioned on the extreme edges of the bumper, there is a rugged skid plate underneath the bumper and a black element completes the front section. Moving down the sides reveals stylish alloy wheels, handy roof rails, chunky wheel arches and more. At the rear, the connected LED taillamps via an LED light strip are the highlight, especially during night driving. The reflector lights take a position on the extreme edges of the bumper which is accentuated by a sturdy skid plate. Even it has a compelling road presence.

Our View
I believe that the entire success of the CURVV will depend on the price. We know that it sits between the Nexon and Harrier. However, there will be a huge overlap in the prices of the three SUVs. Therefore, people will look for the best value for their money. This is particularly true for those who are confused between the Nexon and CURVV since they even share the powertrain and transmission options. Even electric mills can be common. Hence, people who love the exterior of the coupe SUV will definitely opt for the CURVV.
It will unarguably offer something no other vehicle can provide in this segment. The road presence is a huge factor for many people. Also, since it will be larger than the Nexon, you can expect better interior space including legroom and boot capacity. On the other hand, people who have a strict budget will still find appeal in Nexon. In any case, one can’t really go wrong with either of these SUVs.
