The Citroen Basalt coupe SUV was recently spotted almost without any camouflage. Note that the Basalt will rival the upcoming Tata Curvv. Both these are distinct in their appearance with a coupe SUV silhouette. This body shape was reserved for premium luxury cars until now. But Tata Motors and Citroen aim to bring it to the masses. The main attraction of these vehicles is their unique road presence. People love to own cars which makes heads turn. The Basalt will definitely be one such product from the French carmaker.
Citroen Basalt Spotted Sans Covers
The internet has been full of spy shots of the coupe SUV in the last few days. While Citroen had already shared the official design some time ago, it has only been a few weeks since we have started spotting it on our roads. In these latest images, the side profile confirms the real-life appearance due to the sloping roofline. Apart from that, we are also able to detect prominent wheel arches with black cladding. The alloy wheels look elegant. One thing I don’t like about the side profile is the use of basic door handles. In this day and age, we don’t get these on any car apart from the absolute entry-level budget vehicles.
In addition, the tail section becomes apparent in these images as well. The sloping roofline culminates into a neat integration with the bootlid. In fact, I like the integrated bootlid spoiler and the rugged skid plate at the rear. Both these accentuate the sportiness and butch stance. There is also a shark fin antenna. Unfortunately, the front section is not visible in these images. Still, we are able to get complete clarity on how it will look. It will also borrow interior components, features and specifications from the Citroen C3 Aircross. Hence, there will be a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine with manual and automatic transmission options. The launch is slated for August 2024.
Our View
The trend of coupe SUV is being experimented with in our market by the likes of Citroen, Tata Motors and Mahindra. The latter two will also launch their vehicles with this body shape. Hence, it would be interesting to see how well the customers embrace this design philosophy in times to come. In the case of Citroen, the Basalt will share most components with the C3 Aircross to keep the costs in check. The 4.3-m-long coupe SUV will rival the giants of this space including Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara. I shall keep an eye out for more details in this case.
