The upcoming Citroen Basalt coupe SUV has been spotted testing without a camouflage. The Tata Curvv-rivalling SUV will be based on the Citroen C3 Aircross. The French auto giant is continuing its SUV onslaught for our market. It already sells the C5 Aircross, C3, eC3 and C3 Aircross. Wanting to expand this series further, the Basalt Coupe SUV will now make its way into our market. Because the launch is near, we are witnessing the sans-camo version of the vehicle regularly.
Citroen Basalt Coupe SUV
In this image, we are able to vividly witness how the coupe SUV will look. At the front, there are striking LDR DRLs in a boomerang pattern which encapsulate the headlamp cluster. Apart from that, it gets a sleek grille with chrome embellishments and a large radiator grille section with a sporty bumper. It is clear that the SUV bears a resemblance to the C3 Aircross. The side profile highlights the sloping roofline and squared-off wheel arches with black cladding. At the rear, we are able to see the LED taillamp cluster with a rugged bumper. All in all, it features a sporty road presence which will definitely make heads turn.
Specs and Features
The upcoming coupe SUV will share powertrains with its other siblings. This means that we will see it draw power from a familiar 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol mill which generates a decent 110 PS and 190 Nm of peak power and torque. The torque increases to 205 Nm with the automatic transmission. Apart from that, there is a 6-speed manual gearbox. More details will emerge closer to the launch. I also expect it to borrow the interior elements from the C3 Aircross. Hence, it could come with a 10.1-inch Infotainment Display, a 7-inch Digital Instrument Cluster, connectivity features, electric sunroof and more.
Our View
Citroen is trying to make its mark on the mega-popular SUV segment of our market. However, with the Basalt, it wants to create a niche in the mid-size SUV space. At present, there are no coupe-SUVs in India in this segment. But Tata Motors is planning to launch the Curvv before the end of this year. Hence, things are bound to get heated in this space and the rivalry between the Basalt and Curvv will give us an indication of whether people are open to embracing the new body type or not.
