I have compiled a list of the top 5 Tata cars that no one bought. Just to clarify, it doesn’t mean that literally not a single unit was sold. But in comparison to other Tata products and other cars in their respective categories, extremely low numbers were sold. Tata Motors is among the biggest carmakers in the country today. In fact, it stays at number 3 on the monthly sales charts consistently. But there have been quite a few products in the past which the buyers didn’t like at all. Note that this is a rather common occurrence in the world of automobiles and happens with every carmaker. Let us take a look at the details of these cars.

Tata Zest
The first car on this list of the top 5 Tata cars no one bought is the Zest. It was a compact sedan which remained in production from 2014 to 2019. Note that it was based on the same platform which underpinned the Tata Indica Vista and was built at Tata’s Ranjangoan manufacturing facility. The Indian auto giant wanted to offer the customers a spacious sedan based on the Bolt hatchback. But the move didn’t really resonate with the buyers at the time. They had other options which reflected in the sales of the Zest. As a result, Tata had to pull the plug in 2019.

Tata Bolt
Tata Bolt is the donor model for the Zest we discussed in the previous section. The trend of converting hatchbacks into sedans is quite old. It helps the carmakers save a lot of money due to part-sharing. On the other hand, the customers end up getting something different without having to spend a whole lot of extra money. Bolt was also on sale during the same time period as the Zest. The rugged hatchback gave the buyers an option of choosing between either a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or a 1.3-litre turbo diesel engine. It had a decent wheelbase of 2,470 mm. This was the norm back then. However, the buyers didn’t find much appeal to either of these vehicles. That is why we have the Tiago and Tigor siblings in our market today.

Tata Safari Petrol
Note that while the overall Safari moniker is extremely popular and successful in India, there are some versions during its lifecycle which were less popular than the others. Safari is an iconic SUV. It has been around for over 2 decades. But Tata Motors introduced a petrol trim of the Safari in the early 2000s to reduce costs and reach a wider audience. Unfortunately, the concept of downsized turbo petrol engines was not prevalent at the time. As a result, it lacked the grunt and power of an SUV. Nevertheless, the 2.0-litre petrol was good for 135 hp. But the torque was nothing impressive. People didn’t buy a whole lot of this petrol Safari. The diesel version kept churning huge volumes.

Tata Indigo Marina
The Tata Indigo Marina was the Indian auto giant’s attempt at creating a spacious station wagon. These are designed specifically for large families where passengers can carry a large luggage with them. The highlight of this body silhouette is its cavernous space behind the second row. Instead of fitting an additional row for seating, the space is left empty. Hence, the car owners can accommodate a lot of luggage. While the intention was right, the potential car buyers didn’t find much merit to it. It was on sale between 2004 to 2010. It had a 1.4-litre petrol engine which made 85 PS and 118 Nm of peak power and torque. Fun fact, the boot was so large that people would carry their pets on long trips!

Tata Indigo Manza
Finally, we have the Tata Indigo Manza on this list of the top 5 Tata cars that no one bought. It was a sedan with a sharp front fascia. The aim was to rival the mighty Hyundai Verna and Honda City in our market. However, it failed to woo the customers. Interestingly, Tata offered the Manza with both petrol and diesel engines. The 1.3-litre petrol mill produced a decent 89 hp and 116 Nm, while the 1.2-litre diesel engine belted out 89 hp and 200 Nm of peak power and torque. However, somehow people were just not willing to move away from the Verna and City for the longest time. In fact, these two still continue to be the top performers in this segment.
