Tata Motors have already started testing the Altroz EV on our roads and this will be third electric vehicle from Tata which is expected to go on sale by end-2020.
Tata unveiled the Altroz hatchback in India a few days ago and it has created quite some buzz. While we were still busy drooling over the design of the Altroz, Tata Motors have already started testing the Altroz EV in India. A spy image of the Altroz EV caught testing has surfaced on the internet for the very first time. This is going to be the third electric vehicle from Tata after the upcoming Nexon EV which will debut on the 19th of December.
But let’s come back to the Altroz EV. Tata Motors first showcased a concept of the Altroz EV at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. We expect a close-to-production version to be revealed at Auto Expo 2020. As we had reported earlier, the Altroz EV will be powered by the new Ziptron powertrain. It will also do its duty in the Nexon EV as well. The Ziptron powertrain utilises a permanent magnet AC motor that draws power from an IP67-rated dust and water-proof battery pack.
No technical specifications of the Ziptron powertrain is known yet but we expect to find out more about it from the unveil of the Nexon EV. Tata Motors however claims that it will offer a real world driving range of 300km on a single charge. The Altroz EV is also based on the ALFA Arc (Agile, Light, Flexible and Advanced) platform, just as the regular Altroz.
From what can be seen in the spy image, the rear end of the Altroz EV appears identical to the standard Altroz. There are split LED tail lamps connected by a black plastic trim. The final production model is however expected to have a different front end with revised bumpers and grille. It will also get a different set of dual-tone alloys wheels to distinguish it from its ICE counterpart.

On the inside, we expect the Altroz EV to have the exact same dashboard design as the standard Altroz. And that’s no bad thing as the Altroz boasts of a very smart cabin which has been really well put together. It will also come loaded with plenty of features such as connected car technology, a 7-inch infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Harman sound system, a coloured multi-info display, cruise control, auto headlamps and wipers as well as ambient lighting. For safety, it will have features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, high-speed alert and driver and co-driver seatbelt warning.

We expect the Tata Altroz EV to go on sale by the end of 2020. When launched, expect it to be priced from Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom India). But we will surely have the Nexon EV already by then to understand Tata’s new Ziptron powertrain. Meanwhile, Tata has announced that they will officially launch the standard Altroz in India on January 22, 2020. It’s expected to be priced from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, the standard Altroz will rival the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Hyundai Elite i20, and Honda Jazz.
