Just days after the launch of its new 155cc motorcycle, the Gixxer, Suzuki has announced plans to develop a commuter bike based on the Gixxer to cater to the lower end of the 150cc motorcycle segment in India. Suzuki didn’t taste much success in that particular segment with the slow selling GS 150 R and is keen to turn things around with the Gixxer based commuter bike.
This being a commuter bike pricing will play a vital role in deciding the fate of the Gixxer based commuter bike in the Indian market. Hence, we expect aggressive pricing anywhere between Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 65,000. A pricing strategy involving an irresistible introductory price could also help Suzuki’s case.
To keep costs in check the Gixxer based commuter bike will miss out on certain premium features like the digital instrument console, the stubby dual exhaust silencer and the monoshock suspension which will be replaced by conventional shock absorbers with gas dampers. The two wheeler is also likely to get conservative styling with maximum emphasis on comfort, fuel efficiency and aggressive pricing.
The power unit will remain unchanged but we expect the Gixxer based commuter to carry the 155cc air-cooled single cylinder engine in a lower state of tune coupled with the Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP) technology to enhance fuel economy. We will have to wait for an official announcement for confirmation regarding the technical specifications of the bike.
Launch dates for the Suzuki Gixxer based commuter aren’t available as of now but we expect an official announcement in the coming months. The bike will battle it out with the likes of Bajaj Discover 150F, Honda CB Unicorn and Yamaha SZ Series in the 150 cc commuter motorcycle segment.
