The sub-4m compact SUV from Skoda which will rival the Tata Nexon was spotted testing recently. The test mule has been out and about for a few weeks now. I reported it performing road tests amidst heavy traffic a couple of weeks ago. This time around, the upcoming compact SUV is seen on a relatively empty stretch of the road. Skoda is planning to expand its footprint in our market after the success of Slavia and Kushaq. Going for the burgeoning compact SUV segment looks like the way to go. For now, let us take a look at the details of what to expect from this SUV.

Skoda’s Tata Nexon Rival Spied
This video comes from autojournal_india on Instagram. It captures the heavily camouflaged SUV doing test runs. Someone driving behind the SUV has recorded the entire video. The rear profile is primarily visible throughout this video. There are LED taillamps with a high-mount stop lamp and a rear wiper. I feel the demeanour looks quite similar to the Kushaq in the sense that it looks like a crossover SUV rather than a tall SUV. The tyres are black but I was not able to clearly see if they were steel rims or alloys. Apart from that, the roof rails are black which enhance the SUV-ish traits.
While there have been no official announcements regarding the name of the SUV, Skoda has created a contest where it asked people to submit their suggestions to win the SUV and a trip to the Czech Republic. The shortlisted names are Kariq, Kliq and Kyroq. We shall have to wait for the final decision. Also, no reports are there about the powertrain options. But I suspect the Czech carmaker will utilize its 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine which also powers the lower variants of the Slavia and Kushaq.

The Slavia and Kushaq marked the new innings for Skoda in India. They have contributed immensely towards the sales of Skoda, making India the largest market for the Czech auto giant outside Europe. Going forward, Skoda wants to capitalize on this success and launch new products to increase its market share. I believe going for a compact SUV makes a lot of sense despite the space being so crowded because more and more people are getting ready to purchase affordable SUVs. But the competition in this space is extremely challenging and Skoda will need to put all its learnings in India until today to use, to come up with a more desirable product.
