While this might seem like a strange comparison, we must understand the two cars possess the same peppy TSI turbo petrol engine
In this post, we are comparing the new Skoda Kylaq and VW Polo on the basis of specs, driving performance, design and features. These two cars belong to two different eras. Still, they share the powertrain and the performance-focused DNA inherently associated with Volkswagen cars. We know that it makes ideal cars for those who love driving. That is what makes people so attracted to these cars. Now, while the Skoda Kylaq is a modern compact SUV with tons of new-age amenities, the VW Polo was a nimble hatchback. Let us compare the two thoroughly.
Skoda Kylaq vs VW Polo – Specs
The Skoda Kylaq shares the powertrain and transmission options with its larger sibling, the Kushaq. This means that it draws power from a peppy 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI turbo petrol mill that generates a familiar 115 PS and 178 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This engine pairs with a 6-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission. Skoda claims a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of just 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 188 km/h. Furthermore, the ARAI-claimed mileage is 19.68 km/l with the manual gearbox.
Prior to discontinuation, the VW Polo used to derive energy from aย 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine which belted out 110 PS and 175 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. Hence, the numbers are comparable. One could choose between either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. There was also a 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine that generated a healthy 76 hp and 95 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This engine offered the options of aย 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Hence, there was an option for every buyer.

Skoda Kylaq vs VW Polo – Driving Impressions
This is, perhaps, the most exciting part of this comparison between two products with German powertrains. We recently drove the Skoda Kylaq and have fresh memories of the compact SUV. Despite being an SUV, the driving dynamics are impressive. It offers a peppy mill which never leaves the performance wanting. However, since it is catered to the masses, the low-end punch is not as strong. This results in a better fuel economy. Apart from that, its steering is also much lighter which is geared towards convenience in urban driving conditions.
On the other hand, we have driven the VW Polo on many occasions. It has to be among the most impressive performance cars in its price category. In fact, it held that title for the longest time. Due to its low stance and a poised hatchback silhouette, the handling characteristics were exceptionally good. Also, the steering had a heft to it which inspired immense confidence on highways and around the corners. It was clearly more concerned with hardcore driving performance. Still, both these can be regarded as great cars in this regard in their respective segments.
Skoda Kylaq vs VW Polo – Interior, Features and Safety
This is where the two cars differ significantly. The Polo was famously known for being quite basic when it comes to in-cabin amenities. In fact, the interior stayed pretty much the same for almost a decade. Sure, the build quality of the interior and components was top-notch. In fact, many considered it to be a car that would last a lifetime. However, the German car marque refused to offer new-age tech and convenience amenities until the very end. On the other hand, since the Skoda Kylaq is the newest vehicle from the Czech automaker in India, it comes with all the latest bells and whistles to pamper the customers. Design and Dimensions
Next up, let us compare how these two cars look. The Skoda Kylaq bears a modern-day design language. This includes a butterfly grille, sleek LED DRLs on the end of the bonnet with the main LED headlamps positioned on the edges of the bumper, and a rugged skid plate on the bumper towards the lower half at the front. Moving down the sides reveals colossal wheel arches and dual-tone alloy wheels with black side pillars and roof rails, faux roof rails and sharp creases on the door panels.ย Finally, the tail end contains compact LED taillamps with a black panel between them, a roof-mounted spoiler and a sporty bumper with an adventurous skid plate.
On the other hand, the VW Polo contains a retro charm which embodies a timeless appearance. Even if you look at it today, the design doesn’t feel outdated. At the front, there are rectangular headlamps with a relatively narrow grille and a sporty bumper with fog lamp housing on the extreme edges. On the sides, we get to witness a creaseless profile with stylish alloy wheels and black B-pillars. At the rear, it boasts a roof-mounted spoiler, a traditional antenna, compact taillamps and a sporty bumper. Overall, the design of both these cars is distinct.

My View
Obviously, there is no option of buying the VW Polo today. However, if you take a look at the automobile forums, people are considering the Skoda Kylaq a spiritual successor to the VW Polo. This is because it is the first Skoda SUV with sub-4m dimensions that is currently on sale. Also, since we don’t have the Polo in our market anymore, those who would’ve wanted to buy a Polo can now opt for the Skoda Kylaq. This post demonstrated the similarities and differences between the two.
