One of the most anticipated launches from Skoda Auto in India is the all-new mid-size SUV, which has been named Kushaq. Kushaq is based on the Vision IN concept, that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. It is based on the new MQB A0 IN platform, which has been specifically developed for India. Kushaq will also be the first made in India product under the Skoda and Volkwagen India 2.0 strategy. This tie-up means that the products from Skoda and VW will be based on the same platforms and use the same engines. This can be regarded as badge engineering with cosmetic and interior changes. The Kushaq will be placed in one of the most popular car segments in India, the mid-size SUV segment and will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Some of the spy shots show what to expect from Kushaq!
Kushaq – Exterior and Interior
As seen from the spy shots, which show Kushaq being tested on the roads, the exterior will resemble the concept design to a large extent. That is only a good thing, considering the concept looked very modern and sporty. It represents the modern design language of Skoda which butterfly front grille and chunky bumpers to give it the necessary muscle. The LED Projector Headlamps and the DRLs will have a split-design setup. Overall, it will carry the sharp creases which are traditionally a part of Skoda’s design theme. The rear end of the car will also be busy with a connected reflector light running across the breadth of the car.
Not too many details have been revealed about the interiors of the Kushaq. However, Digital Touchscreen Infotainment System with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Digital Instrument Cluster, Steering Mounted Controls and high-quality fit and finish is something that is expected of Skoda. The materials used inside might be made in India, but the quality will remain high because that is the selling point for the brand. Whether the Kushaq gets a dual-tone interior, typical to Skoda products, or an all-black sporty look, remains to be seen.

Kushaq – Engine and Transmission
The engines on offer will be shared by Skoda and Volkswagen for their products. The Kushaq is likely to come with either a 1.0-litre TSI engine making 110hp or with a more powerful 1.5-litre TSI making a decent 150hp. It is also possible that the lower trims will get the smaller engine, while the higher trims get equipped with a bigger and more powerful engine. The 1.0-litre engine might come with a manual, as well as an automatic gearbox option. The larger 1.5-litre unit is likely to come with a sole 7-speed DCT automatic.
Kushaq – Prices and Rivals
Kushaq is heavily localized for the parts and will reflect in the prices as well. In order to compete with the country’s highest-selling SUV, the Hyundai Creta and the very popular and relatively new Kia Seltos, the prices will play a huge role in deciding the future of Kushaq and Skoda in India. We expect a price range between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 18 lakh, ex-showroom.
