The Indian subsidiary of Skoda Auto, the famous VW-owned Czech carmaker, is finally out with the much awaited Skoda Kodiaq 7-seater SUV. The new Skoda Kodiaq goes on sale at a starting price of Rs 34.49 lakh and becomes the new flagship from the Aurangabad-based company. While it looks like a promising product, getting to the top of the sales charts won’t be an easy job for this new SUV. The new Skoda 7-seater SUV is pitted against formidable rivals in the form of the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. In its latest generation, the Endeavour comes across as a well sorted SUV that is high on performance, comfort and features. The latest SUV from Skoda India has gone on sale in only the ‘Style’ trim. It is available with just one engine and gets 4×4 hardware. In India, the Kodiaq has an ex-showroom price of Rs 34.49 lakh. On the other hand, the Ford Endeavour is available in many variants and offers a choice of 2WD and 4WD. It even offers a choice of two engines – 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre. On sale in a price range of Rs 23.91 lakh to 29.59 lakh, the Endeavour has a clear price advantage over the Czech rival. However, the Kodiaq makes up for the higher price by offering Teutonic looks, more safety features, a DSG, and bits like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Endeavour has a clear edge here. The American SUV’s both the engines have more power and torque than the Kodiaq’s 2.0-litre engine. However, the Kodiaq gets a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox instead of the 6-speed torque converted unit found in the Endeavour. The Kodiaq’s 2.0-litre Turbo Diesel engine outputs a maximum power of 148 BHP along with a peak torque of 350 Nm. In comparison, the Endeavour offers a maximum power of 157.7 BHP and 197.2 BHP along with a peak torque of 385 Nm and 470 Nm from its 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre engines. While the Endeavour also offers an option of 4×2 and 4×4 hardware, the Kodiaq is available with a 4×4 only.

Thanks to a smaller and a less powerful engine, the Kodiaq ends up offering a higher mileage than the Endeavour. While the Endy offers an average mileage of around 14 KMPL on the highway, the Kodiaq can easily achieve in excess of 15.5 kmpl. While mileage plays a big role in the success of many smaller SUVs, we don’t think that the not-so-large difference in the mileage figures of these two SUVs would give the Skoda model a huge advantage.

As you can see in the comparison table above, the Endeavour is the longer and the taller of the two. However, it’s the Kodiaq that’s wider. But let’s not forget that the Endeavour enjoys a much longer wheelbase. It also offers a much bigger boot. Both the SUVs offer seven seats. it’s pretty clear here that the Endy is a much larger car. Sure, it is not as wide as the Kodiaq, but it beats the Czech rival in all other aspects very easily. None of the two SUVs offer a lot of space in the third row, which means the last two seats are best for usage by kids.

Both the models come with many comfort and convenience features. The Kodiaq receives the Skoda Connect touchscreen infotainment system with features such as WiFi, Google Earth, etc. Other than this, the infotainment unit also provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other noteworthy features include electric tailgate, umbrella holders, dual-zone automatic climate control, start/stop button and electric adjustments for the front seats.
The Ford Endeavour also offers many features. The new Skoda Kodiaq 7-seater SUV comes with many safety features. The car offers modern safety features such as electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, and Skoda’s multi-collision braking. Multi Collision Brake is a system that applies the brakes to prevent or mitigate a subsequent impact when a vehicle has been involved in a collision. If the airbag is fired in response to a primary collision, information is sent to the electronic stability control system to brake the vehicle. The Kodiaq also comes with traffic jam assist, auto light assist, blind spot detection, hill-hold control, tyre pressure monitoring, nine airbags, and ABS with EBD.
Even the Ford Endeavour goes on to offer many safety features. The most important ones of these include as many as seven airbags, vehicle stability control, brake assist, hill-hold assist and ABS with EBD. You also get ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Price- The Ford Endeavour enjoys a clear advantage here. However, let’s not forget that the Kodiaq makes up for the higher price by offering Teutonic looks, more safety features (read: 2 extra airbags), and a DSG transmission, and bits like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Specifications- The Endeavour is the clear winner of the two. Both its engines offer more power and torque. Also, it offers an option of a 2WD and a 4WD layout. The Endy not only offer bigger engines, but also a higher performance. The only saving grace for the Kodiaq is that its 7-speed DSG is clearly better than the Endy’s 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Mileage– The Kodiaq, thanks to its smaller engine and the very efficient DSG, ends up offering a higher mileage.
Dimensions– While the Kodiaq is wider than the Ford SUV here, the latter ends up beating the Czech car hands down in every other aspect. The Endeavour is not only longer and taller but also offers a longer wheelbase and a much bigger boot.
Features– The Kodiaq offers slightly more features than the Endeavour, which justifies the former’s higher price tag to at least some extent.
