The armoured iteration of the Skoda Kodiaq is based on the first-generation model and is developed in collaboration with security experts UTAC Special Vehicles
The new Skoda Kodiaq armoured has been revealed. In order to accommodate armoured equipment, mechanical changes have been made. Kodiaq is a premium SUV from the Czech car marque. This moniker has been around for years now across various international markets including India. In fact, it rivals the luxury SUVs from the German auto giants in most markets. No wonder it comes with ultra-premium amenities and powertrains. However, a bulletproof version of a mass-market vehicle is not something we come across every day. Without any further ado, let us delve into the specifics here.
New Skoda Kodiaq Armoured Revealed
The Skoda Kodiaq Armoured comes with a slew of capabilities which can maximize the safety of the occupants even during the harshest external situations. Based on the first-gen model of the Skoda Kodiaq, the Armoured iteration is certified to meet PAS 300 and PAS 301 Civilian Armoured Vehicles standards and gets multiple structural and electrical upgrades. This includes things like protection from blasts (on the sides, roof and underneath) and more than 200 rounds of live ammunition. This is a critical component which makes it immensely reliable. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display has been customized into a “communications hub” with GPS and other controls.
Apart from that, the Skoda Kodiaq Armoured even possesses bulletproof glass and armoured steel, which can resist various types of firearms and also offers protection against grenade blasts. Needless to say, with the installation of such heavy components, the suspension and braking capabilities have been enhanced to compensate for the added weight. Not just that, the wheels boast a tyre retention mechanism which ensures stability and control even if it gets punctured. That is something we see on many presidential cars around the world. Finally, there is also an emergency siren and lighting system to make your presence felt on public roads. Interestingly, the powertrain remains the same.
My View
I have to admit it is very uncommon to witness a luxury SUV in an armoured avatar by the original carmaker itself. Sure, people often take their vehicles to the aftermarket shops to make them bulletproof. But having the option of the car manufacturer launch an armoured avatar from the factory is special and much more reliable. I don’t believe this version will make it to our shores. Still, it is great to get acquainted with the latest happenings from Skoda’s global portfolio.
