Tata Motors is planning to launch as many as 5 EV variants in India by next year. That might seem like an ambitious plan. However, with the kind of models it has on offer currently and the concept cars it showcased at various auto shows, we can certainly think of at least 5 models which will have an electric powertrain. Speaking to The Indian Express, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passengers Electric Mobility Ltd. said, “There has been a shift towards a certain category of cars. The cars are now bigger in size. The average/median selling price of cars has gone up to Rs 11 lakh as against 10 years ago when it was around Rs 3.5-4 lakh. So our focus will be towards bigger cars.”

Tata Harrier EV
It would be fair to commence this list with the Harrier EV. Note that Harrier is currently on sale with a sole turbo diesel mill. It has been among the most prominent models in the carmaker’s Indian portfolio in the last 3-4 years. Unveiled at the Auto Expo 2023, speculation suggests that it could feature both a single-motor 2WD and a dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration. Though official specifications are yet to be disclosed, many are anticipating a range exceeding 500 km. Positioned above the Nexon EV, it is projected to house a significantly larger battery, promising enhanced power and torque. Consequently, both the exterior and interior designs are expected to exude a more modern aesthetic compared to the standard Harrier model.

Tata Safari EV
When we talk about Harrier EV, how can we not discuss the Safari EV. Safari is the 7-seat iteration of the Harrier. It is the flagship offering from the Indian car marque. In its latest ICE version, it comes with ADAS, the latest connected features, striking looks and more. We expect all those aspects to carry on to the electric avatar too. However, it will most likely share its electric heart with the Harrier EV. As we mentioned previously, the official details are not out yet. But going by what Mr. Shailesh Chandra said, these SUVs could carry bigger batteries to offer long range. He also mentioned that these will be on the more expensive side. Therefore, the buyers should be prepared for a huge retail sticker.

Tata Altroz EV
The next vehicle on this list of 5 EV variants Tata Motors plans to launch by next year is the Altroz EV. Admittedly, there have not been that many sightings of the test mule of the Altroz EV. But looking at the existing portfolio of Tata Motors, we can make a logical assumption. Since the Nexon EV is also a sub 4m vehicle, it shares its length and overall dimensions with the Altroz to a large extent. Hence, it could even borrow the electric powertrains. Note that the Nexon EV comes with two battery sizes – a 30.2 kWh and a 40.5 kWh. The power and torque outputs range from 127 hp / 215 Nm to 143 hp / 215 Nm. Similarly, the range varies from 325 km to 465 km for the Nexon EV. It would be interesting to witness the exact specifications of the Altroz EV.

Curvv EV
Then there is the Curvv EV on this list. Interestingly, it will join the select few vehicles in India to offer petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains. This coupe-SUV is set to compete with the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra XUV400, and MG ZS EV in our market. During the recently concluded Bharat Mobility Expo, the Indian automaker unveiled the diesel version of the CURVV. Essentially, the design language is expected to undergo minimal changes, with only a few elements being tweaked. Moreover, details regarding powertrain options such as battery and range are still undisclosed. There’s a possibility it may share its powertrain with the Nexon EV, and like the Nexon EV, there could be two battery pack options to cater to a wide range of customers.

Sierra EV
Finally, there will also be the Tata Sierra EV among the 5 EV trims which Tata plans to launch next year. The nearly production-ready rendition of the legendary Sierra EV has made its appearance at the Auto Expo 2023. Sierra, a well-known name from the 1990s and early 2000s in our market is being revived by Tata in an electric incarnation to align with the trend of electrification. Initial glimpses of this revival have been unveiled here. It is anticipated to commence production within the next two years and may feature a 4WD configuration. The front end boasts LED DRLs on the bonnet, encapsulating an overall rugged body style.

Author’s Note
Tata Motors is already the market leader in EV sales. It possesses over 80% of the total EV market in India. That is already a huge accomplishment in the rapidly burgeoning Indian automobile market. Until now, it has leveraged the success and popularity of its ICE cars and converted them into EVs. It is likely to adopt a similar approach with some of its upcoming models as well. However, it is also exploring possibilities of dedicated EV architectures. For instance, its Punch EV is underpinned by acti.ev architecture. Similarly, its planned EVs would be built on new platforms. That will raise the prices of the EV substantially. But they will also mark the next phase of Tata Motors’ EV journey.
